Hi there
I am looking to buy my first kite for Xmas (yeepee!) and need some advice. I am 53-55kg and a beginner, going to kite mostly in Botany Bay, in Jervis Bay and maybe around Newcastle. I have done my lessons on a 8m Cabrinha switchblade and it felt fine. I can't afford a new kite :(, but found some good deals on 2013 7m North Evo (one unused, one used) and 8m Slingshot RPM. Which one would you recommend? I am after a forgiving, easy flying kite, not thinking about doing any tricks any soon. Would a 7m Evo be too small in lower winds (which I will be most inclined to go out in at first?)? Also, what board would you advise to get? Any responses much, much appreciated!

Any free ride kite will work great. Maybe more important to try find some last yer new kite on sale or any new kite.

You do not want to find out that bladder leaks, or you pulley got broken because previous owner...

I'm newbie but got chance to try some kites.. check this

RPM - interesting kite, massive de power bar travel but kind lack great wind range, med bar pressure
Switchblade - good, epic stability in gusts/high wind. massive de power, just one really good kite
Rebel - gust killer, good low end, really jumps easy & forgiving. Evo is Rebel with 4 lines, bit less hang time but better height
Obsession (RRD) - fast, fast kite. not so stable in gusts, loops great, great low end.

Look and read about bar pressure. Being 55kg chick you want something with low bar pressure no matter performance.
Good luck

What year is the RPM?
I believe they fixed the trailing edge problem (used to tear after a few years) in 2014.
otherwise great kite for learning and after

I had an RPM as a beginner, not particularly happy with it but wasn't the worst either. I'm not going to go in to the exact brands or models that you should get, since there are so many different ones and all have their preference.

In the very beginning any freeride kite will do, so as long as it's promoted as "beginner friendly" or "easy relaunch" etc. it should be fine. I would look for a newer kite as it will probably last you longer. It only takes a few bad moves from the owner (such as storing the kite improperly or crashing it hard a few times too many) for problems to occur (leaking bladder/valves, small holes in canopy that can later rip, fragile lines and so on) so each year and the number of owners really counts.

In terms of size I would go for a 9m if I were you. That's the equivalent of a 12m for a 70-80kg guy so if you see a lot of average size guys riding 11-13m (which is most of the windy days in Botany bay) that means a 9m would be good for you. However, when you're out on a 9m, watch out if the wind picks up and you see the other guys going in and switching down to 8-10m, since that would mean that you would have to go on a 6-7m to not get overpowered. So just head down to the beach, if you see average size guys riding 10-12m (or smaller guys or girls riding 9m) that means that you're good to go =)

Also, remember to try to keep a good distance away from solid objects (rock groins, trees, jettys, watercraft signs etc.) and other riders.

I have an 8m Best TS (used a handful of times) with a new bar for sale if you are interested. I kite at Botany. PM if you are interested.
I started on North kites - love them. Try a few out if you can. It's the best way.

Don't ask for kite advice here. Talk to your trainer/shop first, as most could offer you 2nd hand gear (if they have any) and not try and sell you new. But expect to pay at least $500 for a decent kite.

Hi everyone, thanks a lot for your replies, much appreciated. I went for 7m Evo and 130cm Gonzales board, will be taking my new toys to Vincentia to play there over Xmas :) At the moment I find Brighton quite intimidating with hundreds of kites in the air so hopefully after a week of training away I will gain enough confidence to come back and not be scared of crowds :) Super excited, cannot wait!
