Are you prone to being knocked unconscious easily? Loads of people wear impact vests... not sure how much help they provide as i don't wear one.

Im yet to see someone knock themselves out, but i've seen broken wrists, ankles, dislocated arms, fractured vertebrae x2, broken leg, ACL's blown out and whiplash.

A slim fit impact vest is pretty good IMO, much easier to body drag and sit in the water. Also helps heaps if you often get impacts on the ol ribcage

Pfd I wouldn't bother with as it's generally not suited to waist harnesses. But an impact vest is good in certain situations, I use mine when it's deep water and a little flotation helps when you crash your kite or when I'm going full on and pushing my riding hard, for general free ride I wouldn't bother though.

Check out the dakine surface vest. Not a certified pfd, but it keeps you floating with ease. It's designed to fit with a harness, but after a few crashes it does tend to ride up a bit. I highly recommend it.

I've got a wakeboard buoyancy vest. Probably not one that suits the new Kiteboarding standards here in WA, but works for me. Reason being that if I crash my kite I can float and not tread water till I relaunch.
I don't think that it will be as good as a life saving devise if I'm knocked out.

Lucky I have a thick skull...

An impact vest will help you float and save some bumps and bruises...A pfd will save your life if you cant assist your self due to KO...

Today this bloke at work told me about a unit that his daughter uses when riding her horses that when she falls off, it blows up and protects the upper body? Could something like that work perhaps? If it blows up with air, surely it would help with flotation. I just don't know how it works? Maybe a safety line to the saddle?

If you knock yourself out in the water a life jacket does not really help. It just gives you a bit of a false sense of security, but that is all.
I've knocked myself out twice in the water. Once I was not wearing any safely gear, and I came too face down being dragged along the surface by the kite leash. The second time was at the wake park and I was wearing a helmet and life jacket, again I came too face down in the water. The life jacket made no difference as I was floating face down in both cases.
Just got to hope if you knock yourself out, you come too quicker than you cam hold your breath for, or there is someone close by to help.

I have been involved in sailing from a young age and wearing a life jacket (PDF) is like using a seat belt in a car for me it’s now second nature and common sense and I always wear a PDF kiteboarding.
There are a lot of risks involved in kiting and a PDF helps minimise some of them (with PDF’s as with seat belts, there are people out there that don’t believe in them, but in majority of cases I would say a PDF with give more benefit then harm).
I am a very strong swimmer, but accidents happen and I would rather be floating comfortably after a heavy crash then worried about keeping my head afloat or looking “cool” on the beach. I find they also help when body dragging and water starting.

I wear a waist harness and find as long as I put the harness on first, the PDF sits snugly over the top. I do have two life jackets and must admit one of them isn’t very comfortable to use kiting so it’s about finding the right one for you. (PDF’s for Kayaking are often very comfortable and adjustable)

End of the day it’s a personal choice, but how often to you hear about a drowning where the person involved was wearing a PDF!

I'd have thought a helmet might be more useful to stop you getting knocked unconcious?

I prefer an impact vest as it gives a surface that helps to keep your harness from moving up.

I've have had a Jet Pilot Nighthawk combination impact vest and type 3 PFD for some time now and rarely go out without it. I kite a lot mid week and am often out on my own. Certainly provides some protection in crashes, and the extra floatation is nice to have in some situations. I wear mine with the Dakine Nitrous board shorts harness and the two go well together and are quite comfortable.
