Dont send the kite back to far 10-12 is enough (and send it hard, but dont forget to correct it to keep it above you)

Hold your edge when you send it

Pop of the water right before the kite yanks you skyward (this can put you several meters in the air even before the kite kicks in)

Before you land dive the kite directly downwind for a butter soft landing (albeit fast)

pop off the water meaning lifting the board up using your feet?

Manicskier is right on..
Couple of points to remember..
One cut away from kite till you need to release your edge.
If your getting pulled down wind fast you haven't got enough edge in or not releasing.
Two watch your kite as you turn it make sure you turn it up, 2 is to far, if windy from 11.30 till 12-12.30 is enough. make sure you sheet in and release your edge.
If your getting flung down wind your turning the kite to far the other way.
If your not getting into the air maybe wind is to light, or kite to small.
ONce your up in the air start to slowly bring kite back above you, the higher you go slower you can bring it back lower you go quicker.
Don't just rip it back!! if your up high keep it above your head till your about to touch down, then turn it back in your original direction as you would to get your self up and riding. This will give you forward speed to ride out..
Be sure to point your board the direction your landing.
Note if your coming down moving forward to fast your turning kite back to early to hard.
If your dropping out of sky and kite falls, your not bringing it back early enough or hard enough.
Have fun and let us know how you go :)

When he means "pop" he means
1. Build up some speed
2. Edge your board hard (lean back while keeping your speed and lifting the angle of your board)
3.send kite to 11-1
4. When you feel the pull, Pull the bar in hard while doing this release your edge
5. C*** your dacks
6. At the apex of your jump try to get your kite to a arc and face it straight down
7. as your feel contact with the water pull your kite up

Hope this helped
BTW. When first learning how to jump you have to keep at it no matter what, its one of the best feelings for beginner-Intermediate kiter.
Also try going in to a kite shop and ask if they have a Progression:Beginner dvd this dvd is really good and will get you to the front loop & Back loop Stage.

nice one, its great when it clicks, and you feel the kite tearing you skywards... your abs will be fine after a few boosting sessions then you will never look back

Also, another way to think about the "pop" (i dont know if others agree here) but its almost as if right at the last second you almost stand up and jump high, right before the kite yanks you... leap of the water, well thats what i felt when it really started working good

POp,
there are three diferent sorts of pop,
ollie pop - you can be going any direction and you basically stomp down on the tail, the front will rise then you lift the back foot afterwards this is a good way to do small pops riding downwind, and for learning to ollie to blind, toe side or front rolls.
edge pop- and progressive edge pop..
ok so edge pop is basically riding on your edge generally you need to be heading cross wind to up wind so you have solid line tension.
you have to lean back carve ( turn ) the board reasonably hard and quickly further upwind away from the kite, as you do this your body rotates a upwind abit as well..
you stop your body rotating and flatten the board off to release the cut..
the harder you pre -lean back the further you can cut upwind, this is good for boosting jumps, backrolls an learning raleys etc.
progressive pop comes from more control and set up.
Easiest to actually be riding on edge then flatten board slightly, for a very short time and turn towards the kite, (this will make the kite drop back slightly in the window) you then lean back only as much as needed for your trick and also start carving again only as hard as you need for your trick. This is good for your wakestyle maneouvers.
other types of pop are things like standing tall are used going off kickers, waves, sliders, for handle passes etc..
Good to hear your hitting the jumps to make your landings smoother remember to point the board the direction your landing not the direction you took off :)

Im just starting jumping now and having a ball. my problem is i seem to come down wind too fast and my landing is almost as if i have done a kiteloop. This is leading to some epic stacks and classic laughs for other beach goers. As long as i am out there and having fun i dont mind what i look like. The occasional perfect landing is enough to keep me coming back for more....

Hey guys, i have also started to jump over the last month. I am landing most of them but the problem i am having is my back foot coming out of the bindings every now and then. Makes for a difficult landing. I don't think my bindings are to loose but was wondering if anyone has advice on how to fix this. Cheers

willtups, i found if i send the kite from lower ie 10 o'clock i travel downwind more than if i send it from higher say 11 o'clock which tends to lift me more vertically.
i think its to do with the kite sitting back in the window further when it comes from lower.

Jumping is a 1 and 2 and .33333333-4. kind of thing. With good timng you get good jumps
Kiting along a good speed plenty of pressure in your lines, kite somewhere between 10 and 11:30. Important to be edging your board.
1. Throw the kite quickly to 12 o'clock and straighten the bar.(try not to let the kite go past 1 oclock.) and
2. Turn up wind will still hard on your edge.
When you feel the lines tighten pop off your back foot by straightening up your back leg and
3333333333333.... pull in on the bar. Leave your kite above you until you are at the top of your jump then very slowly turn the kite foward again as you start to decend then.....spot your landing and
4. dive the kite foward like you are doing a water start and pointing your board downwind.
If your foot is coming out early in the jump you are most likely flattening out the board before you take off. If you are holding an edge it is almost impossible to come out of the straps. You should be loading up your back foot. Bending your knee ready to pop.
Got to have faith that the kite will lift you, without you jumping If you go form 11 to 12 with your kite you will go straight up and down (nearly) and you throw the kite from to low you will fly downwind, which is okay but you need to redirect the kite pretty much straight away so that it is back over head as you decend.
This doesnt have to be done a high speed either. If you start at 11 or even 11;30 you can be going quite slowly, throw the kite, edge then, pop you will be quite amazed how much height you can get. Dont forget 4. dive the kite and point downwind.
There is a really good explaination in one of the early online kitemags in the technique section that breaks it down really well. I will try and find the link and post it.
Good luck and i hope this helps.

It's been said already, but i'd put a bit more emphasis on bar position.

Building speed - have the bar sheeted-out before the jump (position the depower strap to have the kite "powered up" enough.)
Then as you send the kite, just before it lifts you off the water, pull the bar in.
That should get you a little extra height.

Remember guys kite needs to be high above to lift you up, so make sure it's above 80degrees when you take off, not out in front of you :)
