Hey Ladies and Gents,

Been getting lessons last season and just had one during the week. Instructor reckons I should get out there on my own. Can get up and even manage to go upwind on occasions (surprised myself!!)

I'm looking for fellow newbies or anyone really to go surfing with. Shoal water near safety bay WA was a good spot for learning and am keen to go back.

Whats wrong with Melville for learners? I have a lesson there yesterday and thought it was pretty good. I would imagine it can get very busy on the weekends though.

most kite locations around the world are in deep waters, so sooner or later you will end up in one of those locations.

Like 95% of Newbies in Perth, what you actually need is deep water training so you can go over fundamental practical skills such as self-rescue, board recovery and various water relaunch scenarios, all in deep waters. Those skills are poorly covered in most shallow water schools.

So far this week only we re-trained 3 students in our school, all of which had multiple lessons in shallow water in Perth. None of those were capable of doing a self-rescue, recovering their board or relaunching a kite in deep water.

It's a shame really...but seriously spending an extra $100 to $200 to learn to be confident and independent in deep water is cheap for learning skills that could potentially save your life and your gear when in trouble.

Leighton and Pinaroo

Leighton = no waves but huge wind shadows on the beach, especially when wind is coming from the South or SSW. This makes the location dangerous for launching, landing and flying kites on the beach with a beach that can get busy with non-kiters as well. The further you go out, the cleaner the wind will be.

City Beach = large waves/shore breaks no good for learning and tricky launching-landing area with little space, wind shadows and typically lots of people on the beach as well

Pinnaroo = no waves, clean wind upwind of the school, bad winds and side off-shore winds downwind of the school especially when blowing due South. Must be fully competent at self-rescue, board recovery and water relaunch in deep waters. However being a girl, local kiters will rush to help you if you loose your board or need any assistance

I've found lately that its a hit and miss with the wind predictions, but for north of Pinnaroo point, wouldnt this make a good wind direction (SW kind of component)? To be honest I dont feel very confident of getting there and setting up a kite by myself without knowing if the point is safe and the proper wind conditions.

Melville point seems offshore today and was thinking of giving Pinnaroo a shot.

Hey guys. I am a newb as well and I was wondering if there is an FB site like we use for MTB when looking for ride buddies.

Essentially, you join the site, state when and where you are riding (read kiteboarding) and anyone else that wants to join in links up on that site.

If there isnt such a site, is it worthwhile creating one?
