hi everyone,

I'm completely new here and new to the sport also. i have had a few lessons with a kiting school and now i am looking at purchasing some second hand gear. a friend of mine has a 2008 naish torch 10m kite that i am looking at buying for a very low price. the kite hasn't been used for a while and the the glue holding the valves to the bladders has lost it's stick and needs to be fixed. i been doing a little bit of research and found that i should be able to buy new valves to stick to the baldders and make it air tight once again is this correct? . the kite has no other leaks or holes and is otherwise in good condition. if i could get an idea on how easy it will be to fix the valves then i'll most likely buy the kite, lines and bar, harness and board for a steal.

Cheers,

Jesse

Errrr.....I would politely tell your friend "no thanks", and look for another kite that isn't falling apart and won't potentially pull you apart

2008 Naish Torch for a beginner? I'm sure there are those that will say they learnt on a C-kite and thre's no big deal, but I would perhaps liken it to passing your motorbike riding test and going out and buying a 1200cc Japanese Superbike!

Torch is an awesome kite, but not for the faint hearted and I think it could be a learning curve too far for a beginner.

If you can find a 2nd hand Naish Cult on the other hand from anywhere 2008 onwards....that's another matter. Perfect learners kite thru to intermediate.

thanks, i appreciate your advice. i am still curious on how easy it would be to repair the valves. is it hard to do and reliable in the long run? even if this wasn't the right kite for me in the first instance i could get it the board the kite a harness bar and lines for a couple hundred dollars. so perhaps it would still be worthwhile buying the gear (if the kite is repairable) and hiring more appropriate gear until i build up my skill a bit.

I actually have no idea how easy it will be to fix- or indeed if you'll be able to get the right parts. Might be worth trying to find a professional kite repair company in your region and have them give you an opinion/ fix it for you. Just sounds like a recipe for disaster to me, but it's your call and good luck with the project

Hey jesster,

Bought a couple of bandits and a torch as my first kites! I'd say I am as new as you are to the sport and love the bandits, they are a hybrid delta cross c kite... and at this stage is as close as i want to go to a c kite! Dangerous!! I have flown my torch and almost want to sell it (not worth it $$$ wise though). As pomE said look for a relatively new kite in excellent condition that is a NON-C kite, lots of cabarinha switchblades and **** going cheap, my father just sold a 2009 12m switchy in decent condition with a board for 350.... you can find good deals, just keep looking :)

Cheers Josh

There's several ways to fix the valves but if you do it properly ( replace.with stick ons or clean and reglue ) it will cost nearly as much as some of the cheap kites I've got .
Hope this helps

mate i did same as ur thinking, i brought a Torch 2010 as my first kite bc was a great deal and struggled on it

ended up selling it few months later and brought a Naish Park which has gotten me up and riding!

Kitesurfing not easiest sport to pick up (i wonder what % of people who try it out and then drop it is??) so even if the torch was in perfect condition id still recommend starting with something that will make learning easier!

good luk

I is a easy fix had the same problem with a second hand kite of mine, almost replaced all of them now .There is a video of valve replacing on youtube if you can find it that will help. Or take it to a kite shop it wont cost that much and you should have it back in a couple of days. And my advice is listen to what the other kiters are saying !!you will be up and going a lot quicker and then you will never get kitesurfing out of your head!
