i went out on my mates speed boat today - he has a wakeboard but the bindings are terrible.

can i use my kiteboard, the boards seem very similar..

(zero skills wake-boarding, i managed to get up and ride timidly for 100m before stacking. after looking at a youtube video it appears technique is slightly different to kiting.)

You can use a kite board if you are just having a bit of fun,
the biggest difference is usually the rocker, as wake boards tend to have a lot more rocker.

When you try to load up to pop with a kiteboard it tends to accelerate, where as a wakeboard will just dig in and load up. I've used kiteboards a couple of times and it ends up with you almost overtaking the boat. ;)

What he said. Rocker on Kiteboard is too flat for wakeboarding. It will work but your landings will be hard and you won't get much pop on jumps. To give you an example, if you put a wakeboard on the ground, the fins won't touch the ground because the board is so curved. If you put a kiteboard on the ground, the middle of the board won't touch because its so flat. When you land, the curved shape makes it softer.

Yes you can use a kiteboard you can also try an eski lid (you may achieve less pop but at the level you describe i don't think you'll notice)

At that level you will be fine using a kiteboard, why go waste money on a wakeboard unless you are really getting into it, just remember to keep the handle in close to the leading hip, if you let the handle go high then you will get pulled over the front. unless you get to getting some decent air which equates to decent edge control then you will have just as much fun on a kiteboard.
