My advise would be to buy 2009 or newer.
the safetys work so much better
The depower of the kite works up to 80-90% of the kites power
The power delivery can smoother

The other bit of advise would be to have lessons if you havent already.

Kiteboarding isn't a budget sport mate. It'll be much easier and safer if you spend a little more. How much are you looking at spending on a kite?

Im still pretty new to the sport and would highly recommend saving your pennies to get something better then a 2005. As has been said its about safety. i would read as much as you can about gear reviews, check out the buy & sell section. Curious to know what your budget is? Kite and Board alone you may pick up them for $1000 but then you need a harness, get that new as it is probably the most important piece of equipment and will set you back about $250, you'll need a leash if it already doesnt come with your kite about $50 and as as newbie I would also suggest getting your self a buoancy vest cost around $120. Do your research get advice from your instructor, even he would say dont even bother with a 2005 kite. Safety is worth spending the dollars on trust me. Progression Beginners DVD is a great dvd to watch too, gives ya heaps of tips. Good luck with your kiting, dont rush into it as hard as it is:0)

Hi Wham70,

Naish AR5 is a 2000 model kite, not 2005. Crikey, I'd pay money for one of those in good nick as they are a relic and are worth more as a museum piece nowadays. It's not even worth a case of beer to consider riding!

I did have a chuckle that the question was even posed (sorry wham70) but it's a cool reality check on our young sport though: 10 year old kite basically regarded as not worth riding and possibly a death trap while good 10 year old windsurfing gear still performs pretty respectably.

My point is that while we do bag the manufacturers for claiming improvements in range, speed, safety, stability etc each year, they must be doing something right because while the differences from one year to the next may not be huge, they sure add up over a few years.

Kite design is still on a massive learning curve with many refinements and innovations to come.

Like Darren said that kite is 2000/2001 and had no safety on the chicken loop and was a pretty dodgy kite by todays standards. It does nothing in terms or relaunch and safety like any modern kite, it will make it quite a lot harder to learn to kitesurf
We have a ton of good used gear at Kitepower Sans Souci I did a package of a 2006 Naish Boxer (excellent condition with pump and leash) Mystic warrior harness and a 2009 Cab Prodigy board for $1000, as an example of whats on offer price wise, and you can be assured that we have tested the used kites we sell.

Hmm. Your right about 1 thing, 10 year old gear might still go OK, depends how fussy you are. You have to ask yourself, do you trust a mast and boom that old offshore? I've learnt the hard way not to.

Last year I looked at replacing my 2005 vintage Neil Pryde wave setup. Bottom line, buggerall change out of 5 grand. Retailer said he wouldn't give me more than $100 for the old gear because it was going straight out the back into the sh!t can. my lad wanted to get into kiting, cost about $2500 each, for good F1 gear.

I dont want to start another sailboard V kite debate, I thoughly enjoy both, but the reality is that kiting costs half as much and you dont even need a car, you can get to the water on the bus with your gear in a backpack.
