just wondering if anyone can give me recommendations on a kite. i know others have posted similar questions, and I have read those, but have a few more questions. i am 110kg and in WA and a beginner. so far I have been looking at the cabrinha, ozone and north kites.

I have noticed that a few people have recommended the cabrinha switchblade as opposed to the crossbow, which from what I can tell seems to be more of a 'general purpose' kite. My question is then what is better about the switchblade?

Also, size is is obviously an issue. Which size should I go for that will allow me to learn on but also be useful when I have gained some skills, probably won't be buying too many kites any time soon!

Thanks!

Hey Milvus,
I don't know if I'm the best one to give you advice as I'm a Newbie too, but since no one else is, I'll give it a crack. I have just gone through the process of buying gear with little experience so I know how daunting it can be. The only real advice I can give you is don't get too hung up on brands if your buying second hand as it probably limits your choices. Asking which brand on this forum is like asking Landcruiser or Patrol, both do the job but everyone is going to have their own opinion. I picked up a brand new board and harness and a second hand kite, all 2010 gear for just over $1700. Although the kite is second hand it is in perfect nick. I got it all on here through the buy and sell section. Pretty dam cheap entry to the sport I reckon. The thing is I wasn't concerned about colour or brands, I just followed some advice through this forum. I think any Newbie is going to find it hard to tell the difference between any of the late model Hybrids. My purchase has got me on the water and once I have some hours up (or years) I will be in a much better position to choose my second and third because I will hopefully be a lot better than I am right now an will be able to demo all that's on offer. As for kite sizes, sorry I really don't have a lot to offer there. I am 80kg and went for a 12meter and a 137 x 41 board. You have to remember that board size is just as important as kite size. I have a mate who is 95kg and he also has a 12meter kite but he has a couple of different boards for different wind strengths. What ever you do, just get some gear and get out there, it really does change your life. Hopefully someone with a bit more knowledge can give you some more advice but I hope my 2c helps.

Hi Milvus,

At 110kg, you weigh in on the heavier side of average, and being from Perth in the stronger winds, the kite size that would be perfect would be around 12sqm.

You can't go too far wrong with the Ozone Catalyst as a beginner friendly kite, quite good value at the price and easy to use with performance that will keep you happy for the first couple of years.

The North Rebel and Fuse are very nice kites also and are easy enough to use to be a first kite. These are fast and powerful so a little more respect is required in the early weeks of learning.

I have a couple of Catalysts coming in for trade in this week I think, so can help with 2011 2nd hand Cats if they float your boat.

For boards, having a look around the 140-145 sizing should see you up and running with little effort.

Cheers mate,

^^ DM is right about the Catalyst. And 8 years down the track after many kites from other brands I fly the Catalyst now and would not change.

I am also a newb and I have been through the same daunting task. I ended up with an 08 Crossbow and I am quite happy with the purchase - My Father and his friend both have 09 switchblades and my brother has an 08 switchblade. The main difference between the two is that the SB's have 1 less strut and seem to fly through the air a bit quicker than my CB. The CB is a bit flatter in design as a result and I have found it has a slightly larger wind range.

I had my CB up in about 9-10knots and although I was never going to get up on the board the kite itself was flying quite well and had enough power to faceplant me in the water when not paying attention as it dropped into the wind window :). By comparison my father's friend's SB was struggling and had quite a lot of luff and vibration in the trailing edge when being moved through the window and pretty much dropped out of the sky on a couple of occasions.

Generally I think the SB would be better for freestyle and faster turns but I chose the CB for extra grunt as I weigh 105kg and ride a 12m in generally 15-20knots while learning - hope this helps clarify the cabrinha side of your question :)
