Hi!

Today I've had my second lesson in kitesurfing and tomorrow i'll be having one more. I'm really keen on picking this up and I was hoping someone with experience could help me out.

First of all I'm only 143 cm and weigh 42 Kg. As a true blue beginner, I'm after advice on picking up some gear. I know i'm going to need a suitable board kite and harness but i have no idea what i should be looking out for. I'm not after anything brand new- older models are fine but the selection is huge!

Could anyone advise on decent gear at a good price? also whether its best to start with a seat harness or should a waist one be fine (i.e. i'll grow into it quickly)?

Many thanks,
Julia

It all depends on what type of kite surfing flat water, surf ,wake style etc . Ask your instructor they will point you in the right direction.

It also depends where you're gonna do it.... You should tell us more so we can steer you to the right kite size as well.

Thanks for the replies!

I'll most likely be heading to St Kilda beach, Brighton, and spend some weekends down in Geelong (VIC). I'm no way near ready to do anything too ambitious at this stage. I'm just hoping to make learning as easy as possible.

The instructor thinks an 8m kite and a 130 - 135 cm board should be alright to start off with (although we used a 7m kite today?). I'm hoping to pick up some gear over the next month or so and will probably have another lesson.

I've heard Cabrinha equipment is pretty good for new starters? if you have any tips for picking out a good kite and board, that would be awesome.

thanks again

I think you should go for a 6 or 7. You're only 42kg so with a 7 you can get started with 12/14 kn. The board, well don't go for anything bigger than 130 and if it's a board that you want to keep for a long time, I reckon you should get a 128x37, something like the North Soleil....

Hey Julia, I am 48kgs and I have a 6m north evo and 128cm soleil. When I first started on the board I enjoyed 16-20 knots here in Perth. Now I can go up to 23-24 knots max. Not sure what the wind is like there but hope that helps! I use an xs dakine tempest seat harness which is super comfortable if you want to go for seat type.

Julia, I would think a 6-7m hybrid or bow kite would be good for you. Exact sizing can depend on the kite make and model, so its worth checking first before you buy. If you buy secondhand from a shop they should be able to advise you about the kite.

Here are some summary tips for getting started:

And a page on kite sizes - but not for someone of your weight! kitesurfing-handbook.peterskiteboarding.com/progression/choosing-the-right-kite-size

Hi Julia

Give our Geelong shop a call 03 52295899 ask for Goshen, or drop in to see SHQ and ask for Dustin, in Sandringham.
We've taught many females and smaller people to kite and have found people in your weight range do not need a board bigger than 1.30 nor a kite bigger than 8M, and in your case i reckon anything in the 2010 to 2012 Cab Switchblade, 2010 to 2012 Ozone Catalyst and also think about the 2012 Cab Drifter 7M or Ozone Reo in a 6 or 8M.
Boards that will work and that are easy to get hold of would be the Underground Tahee 1.29 x 38 or the CrazyFly girls 1.27 x 38 or the Cabrinha XO in either 1.27 or 1.30 (get size S straps on any of them).
