this topic was covered not too long ago. scroll down 'tips &tricks' section and i'm sure you'll find it... oh, and everyone had to start from somewhere. Just get out and enjoy it and you'll be throwing tricks in no time

Katie, I have been kiting for 4-5 years and I still regularly feel like a noob when watching others at my spot.

There is always someone better than you and usually someone less skilled as well.

Just enjoy yourself and have fun. As long as you are aware of others (which you obviously are) you will do fine.

Hi Katiesmith,

As a newbie, you have enough to worry about just keeping on your feet. Riders that are better than you will be experienced enough to watch out for you and stay out of your way. Don't vary your course radically, just be aware of others and they will avoid you rather than you having to avoid them.

I was kiting once and as I was passing a newbie friend of mine I waved and cheered him on, he took his back hand off the bar to wave back and immediately tomohawked his kite right down on top of me. I saw it coming and dived off my board to avoid being hit. I came up from underwater laughing so much I almost drowned myself. It was hilarious!

Don't take the sport too seriously, the most fun is when you are just goofing off with mates, not landing complex hard tricks.

DM

PS. I no longer wave at Noobs when crossing downwind of them at speed.

Hi guys I feel the same as Katie, I've had lessons but my board hasn't touched the water yet, I've bought the air rush 9m - I can't seem to get off the sand - eek. help.

^^Invest in more lessons. It will buy you the confidence you need to get more board time. Might be pricey but beats sittin on the beach.

It pays to get to know the locals. They will watch out for you and give friendly advice. Newbees are never mocked unless they don't heed advice relating to safety. We are very protective when it comes to maintaining access to our beaches. But, that said, kiting girls are always welcome in our male dominated sport.

Awesome, anytime over the weekend, although I've got my eye on windguru and it's looking pretty crazy.

I have a man too that owes me lots of trecks down the beach and rescuing time (he used my kite last weekend because it was so gusty and can't g upwind yet). So we have a personal lauch/land and carry man to make the most of

Sweet, so keen to hook up - will follow others suggestion on time/place for this weekend. Even if wind is average it'd still be fun to meet.

Guess it depends on your weight and kite size mate. Should be able to at least fly and practice with your kite.

Thats what I was thinking. I managed to get up last weekend on a 6 meter kite when it was blowing about 15-17 knots, so I think I should be alright with my 12.
