i am learning to kitesurf and have had a couple of lessons at the maroochydore river mouth, but i dont really feel confident in the deep water.
i live near lake weyba and would like to practice there, but i am not sure on the best way to launch and get out on the water.
i have seen a few guys walk out near the middle and launch, is this easy enough for a begginer?
I did ask my instructor but he wasnt sure.

Hi mate, don't be afraid to ask the other kiters questions or even walk out with someone about to launch and watch.
For your first time you only want fairly light wind (10-15)knots and remember that once you have set your lines(most people run their lines down wind at Weyba)...hook in & walk around your kite to grab the leading edge, don't walk straight up your lines & go under your kite as this will cross your lines.

As long you know how to use your safety,s correctly and the wind is not too strong you cant really get into to much trouble.

It's tricky at first but if done in under 15kts to start you can't go too far wrong.

The key is to lay out your kite and lines on the shore, hook in and then grab your kite and wade out into the lake - far enough for plenty of room to be dragged downwind. Pay attention to your lines and avoid any sticks/leaves tangling as they drag out behind you. If someone can help with this process then it will be a lot easier.

When you are out a fair way, place the kite in the water LE down and let it drift downwind to the end of your lines. If all goes well it will be in a normal position to launch - pull on one line to bring it to the edge of the window and launch.

The biggest problem is tangles in your lines or lines hooked on the kite etc. Avoid at all costs and be ready to hit your QR when the lines tension up.

Weyba can be gusty so keep an eye on the water to see the gusts coming.

thanks for the info! i couldnt really find any other method, other than anchoring the chicken loop to something and walking the kite out which sounds like a pain. , might head over and have a chat to some of the guys down there..

Drift launches are very hit and miss - I would hardly call them "safe".

Any kite you have enough power to ride with has enough power to make a mess of you if it all goes wrong. Also remember your safety will not work while you are winding out the lines.

If you must do a drift launch be very careful about the lines as they play out, and whatever you do only hook in after everything is in the air and flying properly.

Here is a video showing a drift launch.

I'd be very careful as already said, about the lines snagging on something. And when he walks to the right of the kite, he has to make sure he is upwind of the lines.

I've drift launched by unwrapping the lines with a Xbow IDS, but there are many things which can go wrong and probably will.

After trying a few times with mixed results, I'm not a fan of drift launching and would use an anchor launch system with a floating rope tied round a rock instead if it possible to set that up. Polyethylene rope floats.

Having said all that, it is very very risky for a beginner to self launch by any method and you should try to kite with other kiters and get an assisted launch until you develop some skill. As a beginner, if something goes wrong, you wont know how to sort it.

Is your instructor a qualified one? Go and see George & Fiona at Adventure Sports at Noosa, or Martin at Lake Cootharaba. They will both be able to teach you the best method to launch at Lake Weyba. George teaches at Lake Weyba often. Top school, all their customers gave them thumbs up. Their contacts can be viewed at: http://www.ikointl.com/iko.php?page=iko-kiteboarding-centers.php

Couldn't agree more.. on the few times I've attempted a drift launch the lines ended up tangling despite taking heaps of care... dodgy times/ took me the better part of an hour or two to disentangle. When they're not under tension and are wet the lines seem to be pretty keen to tangle; made worse with any piece of weed or stick. I think the anchored approach could be worth investigating.
