Welcome to the sport. Once the bug gets you life will never be the same. Good idea asking for a buddy as the few few months are more fun and safe with someone else to keep an eye out for you. Prolly better to put this in the Vic section if you haven't already. Also there's a Facebook group called Melbourne Kiteboarding Hookup which is great for finding a buddy. Near to you there are a lot of first and second season kiters up at Altona you could hook up with any day there's some moderate wind from the south/south east and the tide is in. Just make sure you head down to the Apex Park end and walk out over the creek to the big sandbar as that's where you'll find people who are learning too as there's at least 50m of water as a buffer between you and the shore. Speak to Steve at KSS as he knows most of the kiters in the area by name.

And watch out for blue ring octopuses over that sand bar area....

Sorry I am still suffering from that experience!

Not a problem dude! Yesterday arvo at Altona was incredible...not far off perfect conditions for my 10.

There was one older gent on an F-One who was going wild...big air, mobes, backrolls and obvious having the time of his life..hooting like a banshee!

Kiting keeps you young, I guess

Hi Guys, I am also completely new to the sport, had about 3 lessons, just bought a pre-loved 12m North Rebel which, finally, I seem, but to be able to keep in the air. Last week in St Kilda, my first attempt to stand-up on board got rewarded with 2 metres of an ugly half-crouch 'journey' followed by a forward fall and the kite crashing into a pile of rocks surrounded by thick seaweed. To spare you the ugly details of detangling, walk of shame etc., I just picked-up the kite from repair and was looking forward to follow someone's kind advice to go to Altona and "build skill and confidence in a more spacious and safe environment" and then return to St Kilda/South Melbourne area where I am from... Keen as mustard to go to Altona asap, I have just read all these Altona Sting Ray and Octopus horror-stories... I am pretty determined to keep on hanging in there and to come to the point of mastering the basics but find these safety issues pretty deflating. Any tips for relatively safe locations or general risk-management advice? Many thanks!
