A lot of it depends on the kite itself. Some kites are gruntier than others. As a general guideline, 10m would suit you well. You may struggle to get going in 10-12knts and be hanging on in over 22 knts depending on experience level but a 10m would would be a good starting point.
Best advice would be to talk to your local kiters.

Hi Jess
I am certainly no expert ( same situation as you ) and same weight and I have been told,by people in the know, that a 10m is a good size.
Cheers

10 is a good size but if you have money... Something a smidgen bigger possibly, i live south east qld started on a 11 at 65kg. A larger kite is somewhat easier to 'sheet and go' in our mediocre winds. With better gust handling abilities and considering your average winds aybe an 11 or 12 and a smaller kite.

Having said that now I'm better/more efficient get away with a 10 for 12-35ish+. As has been said be prepared to hold on!

Dude you must have put on a ship load more weight if you reckon you can use a 10m in "35ish+". ...... Like another 100kg LOL

I'm 85kg and struggle to hold an 8m in 35+knots and I e been kiting for almost 10yrs.

As for the original post a 10 or a 12 would suit you best.

hearing heaps of people recommend 10m for 70-80kg. Im 70kg and find my 10m lacks a little. this may be my inexperience though. how much do different brands of kite vary with the same 'meterage'?

one kite quiver? 10m for sure. mine is my most used and does me 16-30 knots. Thats the sweet wind any way. under 16 needs a big kite so you might as well build a quiver around a 10 then get smaller or bigger depending on your location.

I'd suggest a 15-17m, 10m, 8m

there are some really ill informed replies here.

Your going to need a 12 at your weight. The averaging winds for the lower half of qld on a kiteable day sit between 15 and 25 knots. A 10 has barely any hope at your wieght below 16 or 17 knots. You will feel underpowered.

A 12 is a must for that weight range and its what i would sell you in the kite shop I work at.

+ 1

My first kite was a 12m, many times during my learning phase I thought that I was lucky that I bought this size. The thing with my kiting is the better I got the more power I wanted. I now ride a 13m and am 80 kg,been kiting about 6 months.

It's a good 10, if it's blowing 25+ I give the centers an extra 15cm as well, probably not smart but hell you can get some sweet air in high winds :)
