Rider: 90kg ,Level (intermediate)

Which of these kites should I go for.... Edge is cheaper, but I dont like idea of 5th line, and that its a more technical kite to fly.
I have a SB3 which I love.....

I need the kite for winds of between 20-30+ knots.

I dont expect to be a kite loop king, now or in the future.

It's not a 5th line in the traditional sense, and the anti-inversion lines do a sensational job of getting the kite out of any hairy situations you might get it into.
Personally i'd be going the Edge, but that's just because i prefer the direct feel and response that a kite without pulleys provides.
I'm sure the Crossbow IDS is a great kite, but it's not my type of kite. It might be your type though; different strokes for different folks.

I really like both kites, but I would have to say the Edge2 wins for me with a better feeling top end and a better feel in general because it does not have pulleys at all.
It is not complicated or technical to fly and would be an ok partner in a mixed quiver with an SB3.
Excellent for boosting height and hangtime, better and easier than the CB IDS.

They have now gone on closeout too, in prep for the 09 kites release in Jan 09. There are a few demo 9M around which will be sold off for even less, the ones I have are in excellent condition, used it as Mambo, and might again this arvo.

Well I went for the Edge2 9m and absolutely delighted with this kite (thanks Steve for putting me onto this kite). Its everything that I have read... light bar pressure, but you know where the kite is. Super sharp steering ( for the first time I believe I will be capable of doing kiteloops ). Ive actually now done 2 with success.
The range is ridiculous...Ive used it from over 20 knots to 35 knots here in Capetown.
Jumping is harder to get right, but when you do get it right - man it is sweet. Gliding in and soft landings are the features i want.
It has improved my jumps on the SB3 - as I pay more attention to timing now.
But i think i am going to change the SB3 for a Edge 13.

One thing I do dislike - and its because I dont have a system yet, is unwinding the 5 lines... that extra line just makes it messy... what is the secret to doing this correctly?
I am walking down the lines with it between my legs - but I get about 5 meteres and the lines dont seperate, and the bar starts draggin behidn me - and it starts driving me nuts.
do you secure the lines to the kite before walking up the lines?
any tips would greatly be appreciated...

It helps to have wound up your lines neatly the previous session, when unwinding, dump some sand on the first couple of metres of lines to stop them blowing around, once you have wound out the lines and put the bar down, this is my latest favourite trick, go back to the line ends and pull them taut. This really helps to get any twists out.
I usually run the steering lines outside my legs, the centre 3 though the fingers of one hand, and the other hand can keep a bit of tension on the lines in front as you go.

I didn't think Cabrinha guy's had heard of any other kind of kite

Edge 2 is just a sweet sweet sweet kite.
I love mine....

Get a demo first tho. Hopefully you can try each kite back to back.
I have tried all sorts of kites in the last 12 months and for me nothing makes me feel happier thn the edge, especially the 7.

Tobes has good advice, winding up at the end of a session carefully leads to an easy rig on your next one for sure.

Another trick I've learned (its a bit of an opposite to what everyone else is doing thing!), when everyone is rigging upwind and its congested, I rig downwind.

This way,

Undo a few M of line first, then connect the 2 front lines (I've already pulled the bridle and 5th line pigtail clear).
Then walking downwind or even cross downwind (better in tight sposts) unwind all the lines and put the bar down red side on the right. Then pull the front lines tight and undo the twists.
Then walk back to the kite with the 5th line between legs and the outsides in hands, and connect those 3 lines.
One walk and its all done. Its easy to walk back upwind with the 3 lines because the fronts are tight.

Works just as easy for 4 line kites.

Remember to turn the bar over when you launch.
