I have had my 5th line on my 05 ss for about 2 months and have no joy but plenty of kitemares. For starters the shackle wont hold onto the cylinder, the oh **** loop wont grip, and thats just the start. I have had the 5th line tangle around my kite 4 times for 4 big swims. Also when untangling lines from being forced to do a self rescue the added line adds about 30 mins to the untangling nightmare. Anyone else had any probs?

i am unsure what your issues are

i have been using 5 line in 13 and 15 05s and love the improvement it makes to how the kites fly

only down side it takes a bit longer to roll out the lines

take the bar to ss dealer and get them to check u have set it up right

check and fine tune the 5th line stopper length when this is set right most of the problems that can cause 5th line raps seem to go away.
when wraping up lines, get a piece of platic with 5 grooves that you can jam your lines into. then as you detach lines place in order into the grooves. then wrap up lines, this helps a lot.

Hey Bowski,

I ride fuels with an 05 5th line. I changed the o5 system a bit and put on my own wave grenade set up using a shackle with a little pin welded onto it. If you turn the 5th line leeder section near the bar around then you have a spliced loop that you can thread through you're double barrel, bar, cleat and then put onto you're grenade.

Works a treat, No more Bow Tie worries.

To help prevent a `bow tie` situation, I have used a length of shock chord which spans across(not too taut) connecting at the leading edge pig tails using plastic snap clips. I leave this attached permanently.

You rig up the 5th line in front of this. I did have a few bow tie situations proir to this modification, but none since(touch wood)

PS This simple modification will work with any 5th line rigged kite.

Material costs around $5 per kite.

Prevention rather than cure!

Chas - need more details.

Diagrams and materials.

So you connect a length of <what> between the leading edge pigtails (kinda like a RRD) and then make the fifth line go in front of this spanning thingy? But how long do you make the spanner thing and how does it work? I always planned to rerig the fifth line so that it doesn't go through the chiken loop but through a fixed ring adjacent to the loop which the leash attachment to the fifth line cannot pass through. If the kite does then bow tie you just un clip from the fifth line and onto a steering line. kinda a modified slingshot thing. Ideas/opinions?

Jim,
I pumped up the kite to it`s usual pressure and measured and cut a piece of elasticated shock cord(5-6mm dia) and cut it slightly longer than the span from the front leading edge pigtails. This is to still allow the kite to take it`s natural shape and not be restricted. I used plastic snap connectors to attach to the pigtails. I bought all the materials from the local ship/yacht chandlers.

I now leave this permanently on each kite and as far as I can tell/see, it appears not to have a detrimental effect on how the kite flies, turns or reacts. I use SS Fuels 06, but this modification should work on any kite rigged with a 5th line. This line across will now act as a physical barrier, so long as you rig the 5th line in front of it and therefore should prevent a `bow tie` situation, and as previously mentioned, so far so good.

It`s a cheap and cheerful modification to an annoying situation and could save you a lot of grief.
