A kite repairer once told me to always go for dark or preferably black coloured kites, as they absorb (or let it pass) heat more and hence fly faster through the air and the material lasts longer too. White or light coloured canopies reflect a lot of heat and actually get "hotter" and makes the material weaker and more prone to tears and pin holes.
