Hi flyers~!

This is my first season flying~ WOOT

I gotta say kitesurfing is the biggest WOW going. I am so hooked I try to fly every single day now. I am always the last guy on the beach as the sun sets.

I need a few tips from someone with experience on the 2006 Halo.

I began kitesurfing with a 10M Airush Pilot. I flew that for about four months and then got a 14M Airush Halo. The Halo is proving tricky for me as it has such different characteristics ... I love the depower ability as it goes from monster pull to zero pull ... but for me (and I think it is due to light wind conditions) but for me the bar feels like it needs to be pulled in all the way all the time... if I let it out 3 or 4 inches I get too much depower. I find that if I have the bar out at all it makes turning super slow.. again this is likely due to low wind conditions as I'm still learning on it and am taking it out in 10kt winds.. I'm 85 kilo guy so I know I am flying in underpowered conditions.

My main question is about the depower straps. There is a plastic/purple-ish loop to pull on (the "white" strap" and there is a black toggle strap (the "black" strap) to pull on.

So far it looks to me that they both do the same thing in that they both pull in on the front lines and depower the kite. My trouble seems to be that if I pull in on them (either one) they do their thing... but I cannot easily let them out... If I pull in too much on the strap I have a tough time getting them back out to powered up mode while out on the water...

I am probably doing something wrong or just don't fully understand the straps/how they work.. and any advice is greatly appreciated.

To date my best 'trick' is being able to ride out and ride back without crashing. For me though, that amounts to HEAPS of fun and I say kiteboard everyday~ Thanks in advance for any and all help/suggestions.

Errr check that.. My metric aint so good.

I posted I'm 85 kilos and when I used a calculator I am really 95 kilos. That weight plus 10kt winds on the 14M Halo may help explain my turning problem.

I think what I am looking for are tips on how to rig so that I get more turning responsiveness in low winds?? I am still very much a rookie and have great amount of awe for the power these kites generate... read: scared to death at times hahaha.

Since the 10M Pilot was my first kite I guess I got used to its stability. It flys very predictably, turns quick if I use upper knots to tie up to... but by comparison the Pilot does not have anywhere near the depower the Halo does... I did not know what depower was until I flew the Halo.... no I know. I just am having a tough time getting it under control ... I seem to depower too much.

Ok, gotta run, thanks in advance.

Sounds like we went down the same road. I started on a 12m Pilot in Nov 05 then after 3 months bought an Airush 10m halo. I love the halo for upwind and depower but I started jumping after 4 months and kept inverting the Halo. Mainly because of my inexperience. I have now temp moved to Qld (for 1 year) and had to get a bigger kite (less wind) so I got a 14m C to get me through till I get back to Margies and must say felt allot more comfortable going for as much air as I can get without worrying about inverting. Which perpetuates confidence and experience. Recently I’ve been jumping with the Halo without dramas as I guess I’ve just got a bit better at it. For me I wish I had have stuck with the C for a bit longer before launching into the high performance kite. As far as the 10knts goes, that’s half your problem. When I first started I was going out in light winds thinking it was easier to learn but in fact it just made it harder. Id say 15k min 4 U. When you do get some proper wind and tension on the ropes you will be able to make the adjustments to the sheeting and easily see which strap depowers and powers back up, the kite. Basically you will have it fully powered up for kiting and depowered for walking back up the beach if you need to. When I get back to Marg’s I have a new Airush 07 flo waiting for me which is a mix between C and Bow. Sounds like a perfect mix.

Hi Jimbabarino,

The trim strap you speak of has two loops, the p[urple one, which "powers up" the kite and the black one which "depowers" the kite.

The 14 Halo is a hell of a jump up from the Pilot, kinda one extreme to the other. The 14m Halo is a big bitch which is slow, heavy and cumbersome, but it has bottom end to burn. Coupled with the right board, say an Airush Exile of 06 or Protoy Exile of 07, it should get you planing upwind in 11 or 12 knots no problem.

The Halo's are technical in that they develop heaps of apparent wind power or dynamic power. Build up some speed first before trying to go upwind. Once you get moving the power comes on in spades. If you just park it and sheet in waiting for it to happen, it wont be as effective.

I rode the 10m and 7m Halos all last year and still ride them from time to time for pure jumping bliss.

They are very technical and very high performance, I would have said way too technical for a beginner to extract the performance.

A friend at Pinnas has replaced his 19.5 Lift Pro with a 16M and 14M SLE Flow and reckons they have more performance and bottom end and have a easy ride to them. I also ride the Flows 7, 10, 12 and 14 from our rental centre and they are a pure no brainer and are really fun.

I hope this helps,
