Just brought a new 11 m, 06 GK Sonic.
After a ride on one from Jason of Fultilt fame on the weekend I was hooked. It beat the Assault, Halo and Waroo hands down and was one very sweet kite. It only took the 20m walk from his car to mine to seal the deal.
However, the relationship with the new kite got off to a bad start when I first launched it and the bastard dragged me down the beach.
I must say that lacing up the bar and lines had me a little nervous. Yes, adjustment is limited, but somehow I managed to set it up so it flew backwards and scragged me down the beach. Fortunately Jess, rider for Best Kites, gave me a hand with assitance from some other crew and we set up the bar so it was rideable. I am still not wrapped in the thing, though I know it is a set up issue and would appreciate any hints.

get a tape measure out and set it so the depower rope is 100cm long eg 100cm between chickenloop and front lines. that should give you somewhere to start from.

Thanks Carbine.

What about the leader line adjustment????

Is that purely to shift the bar distance???? Or does it serve some other function.

umm I guess its to account for line stretch, just leave them though. Then what I said should be about right. Gk recommend between 100-110cm, for that rope. Best start at 100 and as you get better at feeling when the kite is getting choked lengthen it a bit.

franny your a master of disaster. Next time bend the tip over before you put the sand on for a self launch, this way the sand gets thrown off when you back up. The kites sweet, the rider needs some tuning

actually the other way is probably better and less dangerous. Just takes a little while to get the sand off.

yep - the first time I flew my sonic I definitely had too little trim line in and found it easy to stall. As the others suggested, just pull in a little trim line and remember if the kite's airspeed is dropping then ease the bar to let it breath. Even if you've stalled it right back into the power zone, sheeting out will return the kite to travel in the right direction :-)
I really enjoy flying my sonic 11 in the light stuff because it's very responsive and rewards good technique(which I certainly don't always have).

hi

just wondering if you guys have ever had problems with the sonics turning to one side the whole time? I was testing mine in around 11-12knots yeterday, it was trimmed to around 100cm. For some reason it would keep diving to the right. I checked the line lengths and they are all equal, the rear lines are attached to the middle knot on the bar leaders, what knot do you fly on? I am also wondering could this just be my technique, up until now ive always flown venoms and the sonics are completely different to fly.

any help is appreciated

thanks

nope - mine seems pretty balanced.
Perhaps coming from a venom you're so used to auto-zenith that you've forgotten what it's like on a regular kite?

If you're convince there's a problem try inflating the kite on a windless day and checking to make sure everything sets up symetrically and evenly. Also check that your bridle lengths are the same. I've never heard of any other problems with it but its worth checking I suppose.

I had an excellent session last night on my sonic. 20-24kt Nor-easter at Dolls Pt with the smell of burning tyres coming straight off the airport...

Thanks for all your input guys, had a great sess last night, definitely love that sonic.

Anoble, could be a couple of things if it is the 06 model.
First make sure your pigtails and the larks head on the lines are all hard against the knots and secondly I found when I first set the kite up the safety leash now attaches to a metal ring on one of the inside lines. Any pressure on this saw the kite turn. The solution is simple, just connect the leash to the chicken loop.

Oh and if some one would buy Ringys kite off him he could buy a Sonic and maybe stay up wind for a change.

you could try having a look to see if there are any twists in the leading edge bladder

is sensational for setting up and tuning the kite, as well as some handy hints on other issues.

Ive got the permanent marker on my chicken loop to mark it for different wind strengths to simplify the process even more; So when you find the right setting, make sure that you mark it on the line and youll never have tuning issues again..

guys, thanks for all of the tips. Was not able to test this weekend due to some seriously $hite weather. Interesting about the safety leash, think that is prob what my problem is as mine is attaching to my harness rather than the chicken loop, and its very tight maybe this is putting too much tension on the line..

thanks

Franny or is that fanny. The reason Im down wind is cause theres always some crazy who thinks because theyve got a new kite they are instantly better kiters than they really are. Stay away from people with new gear[}:)]

I normally ride with the leash onto the chicken loop. If you hook it onto a front line then you lose the spinning bar and it kind of gets in the way. With it hooked onto the chicken loop you can completely forget that it's there. Just be sure to check it occasionaly as I've had mine come undone a few times. I think it needs an elastic return to keep the red hose over the pin.

Thanks loose fin,
That link was probably the most helpful bit of info I have come across. Its a real shame that sort of info was not included with the kite!!!!!!

my supplier in south africa gave me the link to the site and also a CD with the download videos when i brought the kite. Very useful, and great tips with pulling the bar in and checking the kite doesnt fly backwards etc.

They should print the thread out and put in all kite bags i reckon. Oh well, maybe next year ?

Bit different to the 5 pages of ass covering we take no responsibility crap which comes with all cab kites

Hi All,

I just bought a 14mt Sonic and was using a Sitchblade Pully Bar on it for the first couple of sessions it seemed OK. I later bought a Sonic bar and found serious tuning issues were needed although it was much more responsive compared to the Switchy Bar. It was falling backwards heaps, then powering up and launching me.

Thanks for the info laid out on the tuning of it. It all makes sense and Im going to give it a shot as soon as we get some decent wind.

Also found it a little difficult to relaunch with the Sonic bar. Is there a special way to relaunch? Is it the same as the Cabrinha bows? I was pulling on the side line and it didnt want to kick up as quickly as the Switchblade. I pulled the centre line in and then the side line and still not much luck.

My 14mt feels the best at 15-18knts, The lower end was when I had the most issues at 10-12knts

Have no probs relaunching, and believe me I have crashed quite a few times. The kite does all the work, by the time I have surfaced, found/grabbed my board she sitting at the edge of the wind window ready to go and that has even happened after rolling in surf.
I don't bother with the chicken loop stopper anymore, it tended to get me into trouble, pushing thru when I did not want it to and jamming when I did.
Self launching is a breeze, I don't bury the wing tip anymore. I simply attach the fully depowered bar to the car, walk the kite out to the edge of the window where it sits and then walk back and hook up. It really is a very sweet kite.
