The Adelaide Kite Flyers Association is running the 10th Adelaide International Kite Festival at Semaphore Beach in March. Crowds over the weekend are estimated to exceed 70,000.

The kitesurfing events are not highly competitive, but are aimed at promoting the sport and putting on a show. This year we will be running a downwind race, freestyle challenge and boarder-X. All entrants to the kitesurfing events will be given a free rashie.

You do not need to be an AKFA member to enter the event, just register for the Festival. The kitesurfing events are scheduled for Saturday afternoon, depending on wind. More information and a registration form can be found on the AKFA website: www.akfa.net/

Hope to see you there.

For anyone interested in joining in the Downwinder, be at the registration tent at the base of the Semaphore jetty at 1pm on Saturday 24 March.

We will make sure everyone is registered and have a meeting to hand out rashies, decide the starting point for the downwinder and discuss the rules. We may be able to provide transport up-wind for some people, but its probably best to make your own arrangements to get to the start line.

A likely starting point would be The Chicken Shop, which is about 1km south of Fort Glanville. We have permission from the council to use the section of Semaphore Beach for the Festival, that is normally off-limits to kite boarders.

The exact timing of the events will depend on the wind.

The best I can advise is to be at the registration tent by 1pm on the Saturday. We should be able to schedule the events then.

If the wind's not right on Saturday, we'll try to hold the events on Sunday. But last year we didn't hold any kiteboarding events due to light wind. At least there will be a spectacular display of other kites to look at...

There will be a slider or 2 to play on and a kitercross racing over an inflatable obstical and there will be awards for the best of what was done.

All done on a loose format to conform with conditions. You do need to register and there will be a briefing at lunchtime both days for event timetable.

The down winder we will try to do at a set time of 3 I think which will give the best chance of wind and will probably have a freestyle session after a rest and rehydrate. will be kiting all day if there is wind and have fireworks and night flying on sat night. Sunday will be mailly freestyle nad a kiter-cross style course.Party and presentation.

Night flying? Is that kitesurfing at night or with stunt kites? Id almost be up for tying a couple of glow sticks onto the beast and going for a blast. Anyone else?
