Hey mate,

I started out with second hand gear too.

I figure you would know what you need as a basic setup with kite, harness and board but the most important thing you should be told is to get the best kite you can afford.

Anything pre-2007,2008 is going to make your life very difficult. The old cabrinha CO2 and others were renowned for their lack of de-power.

After 2007, 2008, the depower got so much better so it will be safer for you to learn on.

Depending on your weight, I am 90kg and use a 12m for wind between 14-20 kts. so try and get an estimate on the size of kite you would need.

Finally, the best bit of advice is make sure the conditions are right. Too little wind and you will spend the day with the kite falling out of the sky, too much wind and you will hurt yourself and others.

So the best bet is to look on seabreeze for old kites, boards and harnesses (and ebay) and if you find a setup that is as new as possible (with reputable brands) and you can afford, then go for it.

There are a couple of complete setups on ebay at the moment but I dont know the details.

Good luck with it and welcome to the addiction!

(Never be afraid to spend that little extra and go back for another lesson!)

Good advice there. Also go to Onboard as they will have so demo kites for sale and they were doing a killer deal on some run out kites.

Your instructor should be able to give you some advise on what gear to look for.

Avoid buying off ebay if possible as you never know what condition the gear is in, its always better to see the gear inflated and flying.

Good luck

Hi Newbie,
all the above is good advice
I have a 2008 Cabrinha Switchblade 3 in good second hand condition if you are over 75 kg it might suit-it was perfect for me at the start. check it out on Seabreeze classifieds-it is the orange and white one. $400 complete-then you just need a board!
cheers,
Peter

definitely get into somethine 2009 (year of release which is normally OCTish in 2008) but if you can 2010 and after, check out Cabrina Switch or North Rebel, they are quite different but a 2010 model in each is a really good kite. Get into Onboard and ask about the difference between them so they can work out what style of kite you fit best, then you'll nevel look back.
