Went out to Parham this avo and had a good session in about 20 knots.
Although it was a long walk out the wind was good and as discussed before could kite over the weed generally other than a couple of face plants and bum drags.
Funny thing is that after the first hour of happily going up wind in what appeared to be the same wind strength and direction I could no longer go up wind, so spent the next hour just going in and out but not gaining ground. Very frustrating.
This has happened before and stuffs up a good session as if you try to do tricks you just end up going down wind - any suggestions??
Thanks Jim

Hey Jim. Good to hear you got out today. I had a good session @ Parham yesterday but nobody else was out. Was pretty strong and gusty at times; perhaps 22-28+ or so with some clumps of seaweed blowing down the beach. Felt a bit strong on the walk out at times but the kiting was pretty good. Might carry my kite out inflated and set up at the pole when it's that strong again though.

I wonder if the issue could be related to kite size/ wind speed/ tidal flow at Parham? Have you measured the windspeed? I reakon I often overestimate; I wonder if others do too. If the kite you put up is just ok for the real windspeed, maybe things work ok for the first bit (after the big walk out when the tide's low), as the tide is running slow at that point. Then as the tide picks up, maybe your kite size becomes more marginal, as the incoming tide is probably taking a few knots off your windspeed. Often the sea breeze picks up significantly with the tide (cancelling the negative effect of the tide), but it doesn't look like this happened to such a great extent today and the metro winds look like they stayed on the lower side. That's my guess anyway: maybe underestimating kite size for wind + tide?

I notice this sometimes at Parham; some days the whole gulf is your playground and others it's all you can do to hold ground. But with just one kite I'd still choose the out and backs than nothing!

Hopefully see you out there soon.

ps did you see the dead dolphin? yum. It smelled yesterday.

Hi Brian,
I got down to Goolwa on Saturday and had a ball in the waves.
Never took the tide into account and of course it was running in real fast so I think you have answered the question.
I agree the out and backs were still good but tiring on the legs for little result. Hope to see you out there soon.
The dolphin was a bit messy too.
Jim

I'm thinking about creating a parham kiting page on facebook where we can perhaps post when we are going out. It would be nice to catch up with you guys again. It is also nice to have someone help you launch

The best bit is that we don't have to worry about being too crowded as I reckon you could have 10-15 kiters at parham and still be no where near each other.

i have set up a facebook page - Parham Kitesurfers - if anyone wants to post photos, videos or when they are heading out

Oh and in response to your post cube, I haven't been upwind very well yet so I don't know :)
