Hey all

I just recently moved to Port Pirie for work from Melbourne. Anyone in the area kitesurf? I had a look at port germaine and it looks like a sweet spot both for kiting and landboarding when the tides out...is this the case? any other good spots?

And if therse anyone around whos going out let me know I would be keen to join!

Hi Tristan,

Condolences for having to move to Pirie ……Great people but the place is not exactly inspiring for kiters. (I spent 18 yrs in Pirie).

Several have flown at Port Germein, (note the spelling) and the encompassing Germein Bay but watch out for razor fish as they can do nasty damage if you land in a patch.

Telowie beach may offer a closer alternative than Germein. Check your tides.
This is a remote spot, no facilities, so if you are kiting alone there will be no help close at hand to help if your session goes pear shaped.

Take a trip round to Whyalla, when the wind is good.
They have a large kite community, lots of excellent kiting people, huge range of skilled riders including state champs.
Search for posts & clips in this forum for Whyalla.
Keep in mind that this crew party pretty hard, so be prepared not to drive home in a hurry.

Down the Yorke Peninsular coast there are several spots.
Fishermans Bay (55 Km south from Pirie) there are a couple of us that ride here when at our shacks.

Wallaroo has a great beach and some small swell (1+ hr drive from Pirie)
Pt Warburto (spelling?) not far from Wallaroo.
Again, filter through the posts in this forum for more info.

We will be at Fishermans Bay for a couple of days on the long weekend.
Drop in for a Kite 'n' beer if there's wind….. no wind it will just have to be beer.

Cheers

Yea whyalla is looking like the best bet for kiting plus getting to know a few people....ill scroll around the posts for info.

Is there good wind all year long here? I know in melbourne the winter months are preety sketchy, but maybe here is different....

But your right..PP has wonderful people, not much on the water sports side!

Once seabreezes are finished (which is soon) there is a bit of a dead period for about a month or more and after that its winter fronts kiting only. Last winter I only managed on average one session per 2 weeks. Some guys who don't work (or work weird hours) squizzed in a few more, but generally in winter you won't get useful wind between cold fronts.
I usually kite at Parham (which is a flat water spot about half way between PP and Adelaide) but I would imagine the the winter winds in PP area be similar.

Welome to SA Tristan,

What sort of conditions are you looking for? Are you after waves or flat water?

Its definately worth the drive around to Whyalla for flat water and theres a great crew up that way 2. Make sure u pack a small kite though as it cranks over there.

Waves your best bet is down towards Yorks. Havent spent a lot of time down that way but people like sbray or Yorkboy would be able to fill you in with more details down around there.

Winter can definately be fickle mate but if uve got a good wettie and willing to chase it there are some knarly fronts come through that certinaly leave u buzzing. I love stormy sessions.

If contidions are looking good and your heading down to Aelalaide just hit us up and can tell you the best spot to ride given the conditions.

PS if you looking for a ride over Easter and want to get to know a lot of the SA crew make sure you get to Robe this year. Robe Easter Classic is always a massive event. Good waves, wind cranks (when it comes through) and there are plenty of fun times to be had. If you come down though make sure you bring your drinking shoes!

Cheers

Tristan,
Get over to Whyalla for a ride. Excellent flat water straight out the front of the beach, excellent grassed rigging area and loads of friendly people. Bring a small kite, been loads of 7m and 9m days recently, but wind will back off soon. Generally when daylight saving stops the wind stops, winter is almost dead except for the ocassional front and then wind kicks back in when daylight saving starts again.

Cheers
