There is a new kite camp in Tonga that I have reserved some places at for the 3rd to 10th September. It's a flat water heaven but you can also kite out on the reefs at high tide.

Trade winds blow from April to November, so you can book other times of course.

Hoping to get a bunch of Aussies there to share the the fun. There is only 10 beds so guaranteed no crowds. So far 3 of us from Victoria are going and one of those is a non-kiting wife. There is a young couple who run the show, and no locals. The island is uninhabited apart from a whale watching setup that operates on the other side of the island.

If you are keen to come, let me know as I can help with getting there, especially the last leg of the trip. Its pretty isolated. If you can come in September, the sooner you book your flights (either Air NZ or Virgin) the better as the cheaper seats are selling fast.

Not sure about the tidal effects there Hardcarve1. I know from the website that there are plenty of places to kite and that it doesn't matter which way the wind is blowing, there is always somewhere to kite. I'll ask the question and see what I can find out. If that fails I will know in early September!

Tides don't have a huge effect on kiting there from what they tell me. They avoid kiting on really low tides as the flat water areas are just too shallow then.

There is a local bloke there who sells spare kiting gear. Just be careful tho he sold me a safety leash the wasn't stitched, only glued. I think his name was Jonah. He was a tuff kinda guy you know he looked like a real wanker. I saw him out kiting and my option completely changed. I saw him get one of the best barrels I've ever seen. That's Jonah for you .

Wind has been non stop pumping here in Tonga which has been fantastic. The cycles do happen but this season we haven't had more than two days without wind since April! Everyone here is exhausted from kiting so much :) Having a wicked season :)

i find that very hard to believe. any evidence of this? all the noaa data says otherwise and im not that far away from you almost same latitude unless you think 10 knots is pumping i think your telling absolute porkys.

We are in such a remote location that the weather and data instruments are archaic and rarely work thus making the information from these for this area unreliable. We are onsite and experience the true wind speeds on a daily basis. To give an example of this, our local airport, regularly records 6-8knts and in reality we are experiencing 18-25. We have no reason to lie about the conditions we experience as we want people to leave happy knowing that we have given them a true representation of the area. No locals own kites in this area at all at the moment nor do they kite. We have used a 17m on a couple of occasions but our 8's and 10's are getting a work out.
