There are a couple threads around about winter kiting, one specifically about Perth. You don't get consistent sea breezes like in the summer so when it's blowing hard, it's usually accompanied by ****ty and unpredictable weather. I've been out a few times lately. We, as learners (everyone too I suppose), have to pay a lot of attention to what is going on. The conditions can change really quickly.

I suppose the key is to make sure you are prepared for anyhting at all times and to be aware that you may get to the beach and you aren't ready for the conditions. You need to not let your excitement get the better of you, just head home. You'll get a good day in now and then.

Here are my personal golden rules for kiting all the time, but especially in winter.

I don't kite alone.
Check my gear before i launch, every time.
Know how to do an emergency packdown (if you don't, you shouldn't be out there anyway)
Ask questions about the conditions and the location. SOme beaches have nasty suprises to look out for and some have a set of unposted rules so just ask.

***#1 Rule: If you aren't up to the conditions, just go home.***
You'll always be dying to get out on the water but sometimes you just shouldn't

How does that expression go? "It's better to be sitting on the beach wishing you were out on the water than out on the water wishing you were on the beach"

You can always take a trip. There are lots of places in Oz and abroad that it does blow this time of year. QLD could be a cheapish trip. I'm heading to PNG in July to shake off the winter blues.

Never going out alone is a good one for just about any pursuit.
