Hi everyone,
I'm relatively knew to the sport but have been flying my own training kite for about a year now. If finally taken the plunge and bought a larger kite but am definitely wanting to have lessons before i try anything by myself.

Which is/are the best companies to take lessons through?
i understand the kite republic has a lesson and seeing as they are the only specialized shop in the area I'd say they are the best but i would like some riders opinions who have actually undertaken some instruction.

I'm based out of Ballarat so heading down to the bay or the west coast is pretty easy.

Cheers for your help in advance,
Al

RalInn aka Tony Lorenz (lives up near your way, gives lessons all over the place!)
Kite Republic (school at St Kilda, shop in Port Melbourne)
Kitepower (based in Geelong but they're instructors do lessons all around the bay)
RPS (shop in Elwood, i believe they do lessons around Brighton/Hampton)
SHQ (shop in Sandringham, i believe do lessons in Brighton/Hampton)

I can recommend Tony Lorenz as i've sent a few people his way for lessons and they've all been very happy (read as up and riding safely) when i've next seen them. I went through Kite Republic a couple of years ago now and they were good back then. They've scaled up operations a bit since then so shouldn't have to wait as long for a lesson.

Just make sure that the school/instructor you use has the some form of instructor accreditation (not so important) and the appropriate school/instructor insurance (VERY important).

Safety is an issue - you need to receive instruction in a safe and controlled manner AND the school/instructor needs to make you aware of kiting saftey issues - check out the KBV site section on Rules. Safety, Etiquette etc..

One last thing is that City of Port Phillip (St Kilda) , Bayside (Brighton) and some other councils now issue limited permits to instruct on their beaches - without this permit you may not be covered by the school/instructor insurance in the case of an accident. Ask to see the permit.
