Hi everyone.

So I've been flying my trainer kite and, fun as it is, I'm keen to try the real thing. I have 2 questions.

1. Is there a consensus on what the best school is? Or is it a case of waiting for the best Groupon deal and jumping on that?

2. Should I take lessons now or wait until October-ish, that is, is kitesurfing in Melbourne a year-round activity or a summer only deal?

Thanks in advance.

Don't think here is much of a difference between the kite schools....
I have heard good reports about these guys

gokite.com.au/

Melbourne is an all year kiting prospect although the conditions do vary... But most winters I still get out at least once or twice a fortnight. Conditions range from cold frontal south westerly to gusty northerlies. Beginners would be well advised to use a degree of caution over the winter months as the weather can be somewhat unpredictable.
That being said some of the best kiting of the year can be had in Rosebud on a northerly.

I would recommend going ahead with lessons now. Get some experience now and pick your days over the winter that suit your ability by next summer you will be killing it.

Just the answer for which I was hoping.

Thanks for your confidence in my ability, but let's change "by next summer you will be killing it" to "by next summer you won't be killing yourself". :)

+1 for Rosebud.

Starting out at this time of year Rosebud is awesome. Get a good wetsuit and go for it.

I think Kite Republic has a great option too - (Winter time the St Kilda thing really shuts down). Mate of mine is really, really trying to get going and he has been getting heaps out of their camps each weekend. (Package deal - Go down somewhere good and instructor is there with you in a group).

They camp together and everything. Really good, social - and a bit harder to chicken out with all your new kite friends at the same level.

mate (Pete) reakons the weekends are awesome - and he's now out and back no worries and working on going upwind... (He was stale and stuck on getting up for 12 months prior). - So yeah. Worth a look too...

(Im not ascociated with KR at all - ) -

I saw all the KR guys out in force on Sat teaching after 2pm.
I should have taken a pic, but they were all on the kiddie pond and teaching within 30mtrs of each other. Even three trainers to one student!
Is KR encouraging mass kiting or something?
I've never seen so many trainers in an area the size of a small kids' soccer court.
I had to launch upwind from them as their students kept dropping their kites at the take off spot and heaps of guys doing the walk of shame up from South Melbourne (including myself). Winds were SSW-SW at best.
But to be in the middle of everyone else, like what's the deal with that!? And what's the deal with this CREW **** all over their rashies? It must be a backpacker thing
Why not teach just north of the rocks and still be at least 200m away from the pier, as it's upwind anyway!?

How are the lessons going?

The bay water is still warm from Summer, perfect for kiting! A thin full length wettie and you'll be all set. I learnt in Winter (August) thats when it is really cold!! Id get out there asap.
