Maps detailing the proposed plans for changes to Port Phillip Bay and Western Port boating zones, including kiteboard operating areas, have been released on the parks Victoria website and can be viewed in full here;

www.parkweb.vic.gov.au/resources/mresources/haveyoursay/zones/Draft%20Boating%20Zones_Combined.pdf

The idea is to have as many kiting spots as possible covered by kiteboard operating areas. A couple I can think of that haven't been included are Port Melbourne, between Foote and Pickle St, and Rosebud, around carpark 14 of the caravan park.

To comment on the proposed changes, follow the instructions under the heading "have your say" at the following address.

http://www.parkweb.vic.gov.au/3zones.cfm

The more feedback they get from kiters the better the outcome will be, so get to it and let them know about any other spots so we can secure our right to kite there.

Not sure if I read this right - but it looks as though the ONLY spots (at the North end of the bay) people will be able to kite are
- St Kilda
- Brighton
- Altona
- and a little spot at sandridge beach.

Is someone able to clarify?

I would have thought this would cause concern with the number of kiters (and new kiters) within Melbourne.

It looks to me like the spot at Sandridge is actually marked as a "No Boating Zone" (yellow) and not a Kiteboarding area. This would leave St Kilda, Brighton and Altona as the only Northern bay sites.

However, am I right that it is possible to kite in the 5 Knot zone, as long as you don't go more than 5 knots (like, a jogging pace)? This is lame, but once you are more than 200m off shore then you can kite wherever/ however you want right? This might make down-winders more attractive. Launch pretty much anywhere, travel to pretty much anywhere, so long as most of the time you're far enough away from the shore.

Tomi is correct - you can kite generally without restriction beyond the 200m line. The new zones are providing access lanes and proposed rigging areas within the safety parameters as outlined by Parks Victoria and the local Councils.

What is the definition of the shore? Is it high tide mark, low tide mark, half way in between, vary with the tide???

My local area looks ok, you have to remember that we are not the only ones usin the areas. My uncle is in council and he explained it to me and it makes sense.

Great idea overall

Whoever put those overlays together needs their head examined for using orange and yellow, you can tell the difference between them when they are next to each other but otherwise it's not that easy to determine, took me a few second glances to get it right. I hope they change the colours to make it easier and more intuitive. For example red, being the universal sign for stop or danger should be used for no-boating zones.

I think the zones proposed are good, they just need to make the zone colourings easier to understand...

I have to say that I am very disappointed in the proposed plans. I was involved in two of the meetings where we clearly nominated as many areas as possible that are used as kiting sites and led to believe we would be well catered for!!!!.

We aslo provided details of areas of high use that have been accepted by the local beach users and residents as kiting beaches. In the end it appears that none of this was considered. From Ricketts to Frankston has two zones, one at Parkdale that I don’t believe attracts many kiters and one at Seaford, south of Keasts park. Areas such as Aspendale and Edithvale that attract high use and provide a good leaning environment have been left out completely.

Unfortunately from my review of the proposed zones around the bay I think that we will simply all continue to break the 5 knot law and kite at our favourite spot rather than be herded into a couple of locations.

Not happy Jan!!
