Hi all
Could someone of you tell me what are the good conditions to kite in Brighton.
The only place I know is st kilda. Its very good spot with many very helpful people but sometimes its getting a bit crowded and what is the worst some guys dont follow the 50meters rule and what is hard to belive perform tricks meters from the beach crushing kites close to others.
I started kiting only last month and things like that make me feel uneasy.
Besides Brighton is more handy for me and its good to kite in diffrent loc.
Perhaps there are other good spots towards Hampton for people like me ,at this stage I work on the transitions and toeside ride. l want to perfect it before I start doing what Im here for - big air and first of all hangtime.
My kite does cover 12 to 30 knots of wind range but below 15 knots I can not go upwind at this stage- its 11m and Im 80 kg wet
Also I like riding a bit far the beach- in st kilda at least its very wise to do so .The distance 1000-2000 meters is just fine the extra benefits great waves and better wind. Please advice.

I started to kite last month and things like that do scary me a bit.

hey cezary,

Brighton is usually good in a Southerly, South Westerly, Westerly and North Westerly some people also ride ther on a straight Northerly but I find it very gusty in this direction.

Brighton is an ok spot ........ it is deep, meaning for the most part you can only stand for about the first two meters so you should be reasonably confident at water starts and relaunches.

Reef - There is a reef which is sometimes exposed to the south east you can get some flatter water inside this reef but there is not much room, so watch the rocks.

Other places worth checking are Hampton ( far end of beach towards the Sandrigham Yacht Club ), Ricketts Point ( in front of the surf life saving club, obviously not if the flags are out but have a chat to them as they will often accomodate you the clubbies that is ) Seaford ( Gnotuk Ave ), Mordialloc ( melbourne side of the pier ) Altona..... etc....

good luck

Thanks for info.I might to try it even tomorrow since the wind is looking ok but if you can, tell me if I have to wear booties around this spot.I used to swim near the Life Saving Club and I dont remember any good places to lounch a kite it was all sharp stone.
I have been thinking and talking about kiteboarding for some time before finally getting into the task now and when you did mention the reef it did remind me about an accident that took place over there.About ayear ago my wife came home telling me about a kiter bleeding proviously and beeing taken away by ambulance- she was hoping to put me off.
Is there any wind direction better than others ,I guess you can avoid the reef in any wind if you are aware of your abilities but perhaps one is safer than others, also Im thinking from the board recovery point of view. I do loose my board many times on big waves and in 95% recovery is no problem but sometimes its long process and if you cant relounch the kite what happend to me once you must end on the beach down wind,in my case about 2 km but in st kilda its not a problem just take nice walk back.
What about Brighton area,it looks more comlicated by the look of a map.

Cezary,

From reading your post I gather you are probably going to be more suited to a beginner friendly area. Brighton and Ricketts are more of an intermediate area due to the rocks etc......

I would suggest driving the extra 20min to Altona...... ( works from ESE to SW but the SE is the best direction ) it is about knee to waist deep for about 200m out to sea, and you can go about 1.5km along the beach. Sand bottom , only one rock ( its small and round about 30cm but you would be suprised how many hit it ) flat water, waves out the back......... less kiters than St Kilda ( 5-10 weekdays, 15 - 30 Weekends ) about three times as much room.

Thanks for advice Harry, perhaps Brighton is indeed a bit too early for me , especiallythat I kite not only on my own but also usually early pm or am .
When I rock in st kilda beach before 11am there is noone there ,to learn selflaunch was compulsory.I guess Brighton beach is even worse in this respect but I definitly want to make it my main kiting place just have to speed up my learning and perhaps to put apost to find likeminded people who want to make fast progress and have extra security in fact that someone else is aware of their movements.
Your suggestion of Altona is very good but I cant cross THE BIDGE unless on my way to the airport.
Yesterday after reading your last post I decided to give Bighton a miss and go for nice safe ride in st kilda but wind gusting up to 40 knots put me off a lttle bit.
I hope you made most of that fantastic weather we had last night.
Cheers
