Well it doesn't really.

Ewan and those of the talented variety show your faces! I'm getting sick of watching the cruisers. Come on down and show us how it's done. It might motivate and inspire us plebs to try something other than backrolls...

What else can you do on a Northerly in Brighton other than mowing the lawn?
It's gusty, choppy, and everyone rides in a circle so going for tricks and crashing all the time won't make you lots of friends. Crashing in flat water is also not great due to the reef.

Maybe 2% of kiters in Melbourne can do handlepasses anyway, and I guess they are rather in Hampton or Rosebud on a Northerly.

Hey Knut, Brighton can be pretty nice on the right sort of Northerly, and you can do a lot more than mow lawn. I know your student lifestyle allowed you the luxury of cruising down to Rosebud but we don't all have that option . If it's NNW you can get solid 20knots and not much chop. I've had many a good session like that.

Sure, on crappy Northerlies even boosting is a liability as you don't know if your kite will hit a hole and you'll plummet straight down or whether you'll get a second lift and another 5 metres over what you bargained for.

Either way, enjoy some Northerlies for me. I've got knee surgery in a few weeks and two months rehab after that. Should be back on the water by August.

True, when he's having a go-for-it day Bernie's downloops are a joy to behold.

I miss the student lifestyle already
Knee surgery sucks... kiting accident?

On the positive side, you probably picked the "best" time for that..
The next 3 months are likely to be crap, and then August completely rocked the last 2 years. You are gonna be the most motivated dude out there then

Maybe I will give Brighton another chance if it's not straight Northerly.

Yep, kiting. I did it in two stages. About a year ago I fluffed a landing and thought I'd just strained the ligaments. Sure enough, the ligaments improved over time but something still wasn't quite right. Then a few weeks ago I tweaked it again and decided it was time for a proper diagnosis.

I have a bucket-handle tear to my medial meniscus in my right knee. Luckily it should be repairable, and fully functioning within two months of surgery.

And yes, I'd say that by August I'll be pretty darned motivated. Until then I'll be working on my visualisation skills and just glad that I live in a city where there's more to life than kiting.

I feel with you. I've been having constant injuries over the past few years and was off the water for close to 3 months this summer. So I'm thinking about getting my knee and ankle fixed. Can you suggest a good medical practice that's specialised in ligament injuries?

Hi Jev,

I've seen Dr Harry Unglik at Melbourne Sports Medicine Centre and been happy with his professionalism, diagnostic skills, and referrals to top specialists.

I have a fair bit of expertise when it comes to preventative and peak-performance strategies but once an injury has occurred it's the skilled medical people you need. I can certainly help with ongoing education about the co-ordination and physiological aspects of sports and other activities.

Take care,

Brendan

Thank's for the details - and it's in the city, awesome! Will need to get a few things checked out and see what's wrong with my knees and ankles.

Are you a physio?

Hey Sleek, cheers for the support. I suspect it's the brink of my own sanity I'll be most concerned by.

Jev, I'm an Alexander Technique teacher. I teach people how to improve the underlying patterns of their co-ordination in any activity.

I work with sports people, performance artists, professional communicators and anyone who wants to think more clearly, move more naturally and feel better as a result.
