Hey guys, i'm from Melbourne and really keen to start kite surfing. Who should i do my first lessons with? and what gear would you recommend? Do people kitesurf in groups? where can you go?

Looking forward to getting started but want to do it the right way.

Hey Mate, there are a few kite schools down at St Kilda beach (the ZU, Go kite and Kite Republic to name a few), might be good to have a pop down there and talk to a few of them. I'd have a few lessons before thinking about gear and the instructors can usually give you a few options or point you in the right direction. There are loads of places you can kite and it just depends where you live and you closest beach.

I have had lessons at both TheZu in St Kilda and Peninsular Kite boarding at Rosebud. I was very happy with both.

I prefer Rosebud as a location, but in part that is because I had lessons at the end of summer and early winter when the wind direction was northerly.

Both offer discounts on new gear, if you have your lessons with them. So if you plan on buying new equipment it is worth giving a little thought to what equipment you might want to buy before choosing where you get lessons from.

It also means that you may buy equipment that is identical to the equipment you learn on.

To add on what KiwiDave said, you can also save money on lessons too.

I did my lessons at The Zu and was very happy too and got discounts on any gear I've bought there since.

Just focus on doing lessons first, if you just have to buy something straight away get a decent wetsuit if you haven't got one already.

As for getting discount on kit, there is always deals to be had its such a competitive market that you will be able to get a deal. I have never paid rrp on any kiting equipment.
