Just an open letter to at least three of the kite schools in operation at St Kilda, who were running lessons in the kiddie pool at some stage or another on Sunday 18th of November:

Please refer to the signage for teaching, lanes of entry and allocated rigging area which is displayed adjacent to the beach volleyball area and directly in front of the kite school trailers. The kiddie pool is not part of the designated school zone. If anyone has a link or a photo of the sign I'm referring to, please post it in this thread.

It has started again (not that it ever stopped).

Silly question (from a newbie), but why is it called the 'kiddie pool'? Is it because it's shallower and safer? Just wondering.

I don't know why you guys do it to yourself, I kited at St Kilda once and it was about as much fun as driving a Lamborghini through peak hour traffic.

St. Kilda is all about murky water, trash on the beach and dodging noobs and posers...awesome!

Yep, on a (predicted) windy day St Kilda is a nightmare. However, It's closest to the city and provides many with pre/post work access to the water and enables many to pursue the sport.

I'm not defending it, but it's the Bondi of Vic. It might be a bit grubby and full of backpackers, but damn it all, it serves a purpose.

I for one enjoy my time there as I've yet to get that good that I'm shunning it (although I know it will happen!).

I don't see the issue, mind. If you're good, and you can edge then why not get yourself away from the newbies and kite further off shore. The newbies (like myself) can provide endless entertainment as you watch them/us/me faff around trying to launch, taking out random dog walkers as my kite flounders on the beach...

Wow, that was a rant.

PS St Kilda smelt really bad yesterday.

Personally I like kiting at st kilda when I'm trying to learn something new, I can ask other kiters for tips and if kite crashes its into shallow water, retrieve board etc.

It does get way to busy tho to be riding suicide.

there also seems to be more and more angry kiters that only go back and forth.

The water up near the peir is also usually quite glassy with a swell that makes a nice ramp for bit of extra pop.

I try and time my tac's to avoid other kiters prefured jumping/trick zone, which is near impossible once wind picks up and it gets busy.

Sorry if I cut anybody off, have my kite to high or loop my kite back in your direction.

I'm only trying to have a but of fun and be progressive / learn new tricks etc.

Rant over.

Nope you must be wrong, they surely wouldn't take up the whole beach and kiddie pool area with lessons. Thats madness, they would be able to see you are trying to kite there too.

The problem is if we are trying to rely on them to self manage its not going to happen. If they can book 20 lessons at the same time, they will because they're business.

Not sure what the solution is but at some point the council needs to realize they can't just continue issuing permits to teach. There isn't the space for the current schools, let alone anymore.

Not sure what the solution is unfortunately...

Kiddies pool is where the much sought after flat water resides - unfortunately further out it gets quite choppy.

This is the section of the beach which the schools are encroaching on - even though there has been in principle agreements, along with this topic being debated over and over each year.
