Hey all,

I'm new to Melbourne and just spending some time on kitebeaches sussing out the spots close to home, I have also been trawling through the forum picking up tit bits on where to kite surf.

Any tips or points in the right direction (ie. links to posts that may have covered something similar) would be greatly appreciated, I have been on the KBV site also.

What I wanted to know was what sites you use to watch the wind, (I like windfinder??) I see Seabreeze has some forecasting info. Any live reports?
What are the wind trends? ie. seabreeze in the afternoon? Prevailing wind is "assuming" SW here in Melbourne.

Can anyone recommend any good spots for flat water, surf and downwinders? I'm based in East Melbourne so looking to spend time down the SE coast if possible (lived in the UK for years and sick of driving every weekend for 3hours to get to my local spot) although keen as mustard for those epic weekends when the conditions are right to head further afar.

Went down the great ocean road last weekend and was very impressed with the possibilities!!

Thanks in advance, if there's anyone keen on doing some exploring/free riding/downwinders please get in touch.

Cheers,
Rob

Thanks Andobear, is there anything I should be aware of down that way? ie places that you can't ride? Once I get some wheels I will be down that way, looks good.

Only the pier, and there is a no boating zone on the west side of the pier. The pier runs north south.
Other than that all good, you will see kites out all the way along this area, which makes it separated and plenty of room for everyone :)

See ya on the water

Check out the KBV site for notes on some of the popular beaches - a lot not yet there but those that are documented also include hazards etc.

As far as no-go zones etc its best to check out the Parks Vuc site as they are completing a Boating Zones Review and as kiters we are considered boats/vessels so things liuke no-boating, 5-knot and other rules (like 50m clear of piers, buoys, swimmers, etc) apply.

Also, just beacuse a zone is a 5-knot zone (generally the region up to 200m from shore - some exceptions have a wider zone) does not exclude kiting but is does mean that technically we should body-drag across the zone to get to sailing waters... Parks Vic is preparing a brochure where this particular point is mentioned.
