Hi Guys,

Interested to know if anyone has been kiting on lake boga in northern victoria over the last few years.
Im originally from up that way, and being a beginner see it as a good chance to get some much needed practice in over xmas?

Cheers.

never tried lake boga

tried lake charm one day a few years ago in a northerly

that day it was very gusty - no fun at all, and definitely not suitable for beginners

my advice is give the lakes a miss until you are experienced (and really desperate for a kite)

having said that I might give lake Tutchewop a crack this xmas

Yep, windsurfed a few lakes before and remember it always being gusty, not ideal for kites.
You might get lucky though, just be careful.P

I disagree with the gusty comments. It depends where you are at the time and if you are behind any hills or buildings. And it also depends on the kite you have. I found lakes are better suited for larger kites (16mt up) but in sub 15 knot winds. Besides you will be cruising a lot on a lake rather than wake style kiting or jumping. If you go out in 20knots or more, get the smallest kite you have. Even NASA wings are great for this.

Hi Mitch, I grew up up that way and have lived there since, in bendigo now. Have kited on Lake Boga 3 times, once on a smooth northerly was about the best i had but a south west would work well round the back. The worst part of Boga is the space you have to launch and land in so its hard to recommend it - especially to a beginner. Having said that i know of a couple of others getting started up there and one of them has been out on the lake learning - but not much. I found the breeze a touch up and down, gusty but not terrible. I have used a grunty 12m kite on there which is not my favourite lake kite but it went ok.

I have also kited on kangaroo lake, again not much room and maybe should not have tied it and also on lake charm which may have been a touch more promising but has a couple of hills around which could be a problem.

Main thing will be working around other people at that time of year.

Other option - come to Bendigo and kite Greens Lake between here and Shepparton which is about as good as i have seen for inland kiting (good breeze and sections of flatfish water) when we get a good session. there is 15 or so of us kiting up here at various times. the southerly works well or south south east and also north west. We plan sessions and post on Facebook at 'central victorian kiteboarding' if you search for us inside Facebook. There is also some video of us kiting Greens and Cairn Curran -

Generally recommend learning at the beach though! but they are they options.

Does anyone in Central Vic kite on Lake Mokoan? I am visiting people in Dookie after Christmas and that is kind of close. I have a pretty good set up 17-metre Zephyr and 10 and 7-metre Rebels. Pretty Confident self launching and landing.

Cheers

I'd imagnine booties are a must when kiting in lakes? Muddy, squelchy **** on the bottom reminds me of those "sotf" spots in Altona. Yuk!

Booties are the go on the lakes - i use them a fair bit. its also for walking back if you do end up on the other side and can't get back??? long walk in bare feet. Greens lake has a bit of mud at times, some of the reservoirs Cairn Curran (good on a south west near the sailing club) are more like stone and sand so not to bad.

Never tried Mokoan but could be worth a shot and its just getting lucky with being there when the wind blows, but that kite range will give you a good chance at it. Sometimes the lighter breeze inland can be more friendly - good for a 17 but mostly i use a 10m (83kg) in 15 to 25 or more knots.

Usually a 5-10 knot gust on the stronger days - helps you appreciate a sea breeze.

Thanks Will,

I know what you mean with the launching spot, checked it out last summer and there wasnt as many open spots near the water as there used to be, a lot more trees these days.

Ive got a mate who owns waterfront property around the back so im thinking that might be the go, the boats/skiiers tend to avoid this section as well as its too choppy even when the rest of the lake is glass.

Think i'll just take my gear up and see what happens, no stress if it doesnt happen
