Hey,
I m traveling around and just bought 2 weeks ago a kite equipment.
Now I m around Melbourne and would like to try a bit.

Are there any spot where i have enough wind and not to many waves for the next week?

Thanks

If you haven't done lessons, no. Go to St Kilda, do some lessons or you'll kill yourself.

If you got ONE professional lessons the best place is away from Melbourne, BTW the fact that you did windsurf is not much of advantage quite contrary IMO.

Agreed, one lesson is not enough. You need to be at least body dragging otherwise I'd go well away from Melbourne.

ok, thank you for your nice replies.

I cant understand what s the problem. I know that there may are many people who are starting without knowin the hazards.
But not everybody starts like this.

In my lesson the instructor showed me how to prepare everything, how to fly, relaunch, bodydrag(selfrescue), and i stood on the board.

But it doesnt matter. It seems i m not really welcome and these are the answers you probable give once a day to someone who wants to learn kiting... without really knowing their skills.

The answer to your question is nowhere. Wind will be dead for the next 2 weeks, and then the northerlies start.

And with regards to what's been said already, they're right, and they're not trying to be dicks. They've just been witness to a busy season filled with new guys chucking their kites into people, power lines, masts, and busy roads.

If you've had one lesson, its probably not enough. It's great to think that you are some sort of prodigy and know all there is to know to be safe, but the truth is that the most dangerous people are the ones that don't know they are dangerous. It's what you don't know that kills you.

I've never met you and maybe you are the second coming of christ on a board.. but for 95% of the population, 1 lesson, experience in a separate sport, and (presumably secondhand) gear you bought 2 weeks ago is probably going to get you into deep ****.

Anyways, the answer to your original question is: nowhere. It's April.

If you had explained your skill level in your original post then I think you might have had quite different responses. Don't get all defensive now, next time just provide a bit more information so that people can help you. The people who replied to your post are just trying to make sure that you don't go out and injure yourself or somebody else on the beach. As you seem to be aware there are plenty of newbs out there with "All the gear and no idea", and at times their reckless behaviour threatens to ruin beach access for everyone.

It sounds like you are at a level where you just need to go out and practice so good luck to you. The Melbourne season is pretty much over now - you might be lucky and get a few windy days but they will be few and far between. St Kilda is a good spot to practice if the wind is SW because the water on the sandbar is quite shallow, but avoid the "kiddy pool" because you may end up inadvertantly getting in the way of the advanced riders.

Good luck

Thanks for the answers and i m sorry for not having told more details. I wasn aware of that its nessecary.

Actually i m traveling and not from oz (as you might have recognized) and maybe i have more chance in the north later on.

I had my 2 hours lesson on the Gold Coast and bought a Nomad 11m with an older underground 147 + everything else and i hope it was the right decision. After my lesson i had only 1 1/2 day to practice on my own. Of course i was the only one in a nice small bay.

There was even an other guy who gave me more tips and already in my lesson they explained everything i can do in the worst case.
I already practised bodydraging an i already stood on the board without big problemes.

I ll wait for wind and perhaps i m lucky... We ll see.

Can you please inform me, if there is something probable the next days? I m still in Melbourne city.

Cheers

Jannis

do not kite anywhere along the great ocean road until you are an expert (a few years from now). the currents and waves down there will kill you.

it's just not a good time of year for wind generally and when it does blow it will be pretty gusty so it's just not suitable for beginners.

sorry you haven't had much good news or encouragement from this thread but there's no point telling you it will be great when it won't. there's also no point suggesting a beginner go out in conditions that need a lot of skill.

your time will come. meantime, watch some good kiting vids.

Farrrk, glad I taught myself to kite b4 all the sh!t started going down!!! I long for the days of downwinders from Hampton to St Kilda with no other kiters on the water.

Me thinks we all need to go out and kite this weekend. Try a new move, it's good for the soul.

If your around the Great Ocean Road your going to be near Geelong, You can try Point Henry in geelong this is a great spot for a beginner like yourself. Its good in most wind directions so you may get a chance to play.

I still agree with most people on this post that one lesson is no where near enough. You will progress infinitely faster with at least one more maybe two lessons .
If your in Geelong call past Kitepower on the way through, Goshen will be able to hook you up with a lesson and show you the inherent dangers of Point Henry

HTH good luck and be carefull.....

I already passed Geelong and now i m near portland. The wind is really to gusty.
We r gonna head to queensland through the inland an i think i have more chances there.

I already tried it on my own an i think it worked pretty good for the circumstances. Of course i cant control the kite for 100% but if i have the chance i ll first continue with bodydrage...

Thanks Jannis
