Actually it is, if the kite has a two way pump valve. I prefer them as they allow the gauge to give a reading and you have more precise pressure applied to the kite, at least to meet manufacturer's recommended pressure (usually around 5 to 7psi). Of course the other way is to simply bend the wing tips after pumping the kite and see if they bend easily. If they do, you need to pump her up more!

I agree. Pump gauges and hand held wind meters go straight in the bin. Completely useless devices imparting inaccurate information to incompetent kiters.

That's a bit harsh. What's wrong with a gauge? Whether it displays an accurate pressure and 7psi is really 7psi or maybe 6 is irrelevant. It allows you to pump your kite to the same pressure every time you go out and you don't even have to drop the pump to bend wingtips or listen to the "ping". Very convenient.

Just steal one from another kiter. Plenty lying around the beach.

Completely agree with Gorgo..... I count my pumps and know roughly how many make me hard. And wind meters pfft.... It's either 8m or a 10m and if you can't tell from the wind in your face.... Well god help you..... ( or look at what others are flying ) if no one else is out you probably ahhh forget it.

Damn, I always thought it had to be hard before counting pumps. I must have been doing it wrong for the last 20 yrs then.
