Hi,

I'm in Perth and planning to move over to Melbourne next year after I finish my Physiotherapy program. I plan on living somewhere around the city.

I'm trying to brainstorm options of places to live in, I'm 25 and do miss the city living of my home town (Toronto), I would like to experience the city life and KS at the same time. I'm hoping Melbourne will allow that.

I have a couple questions. Where are the best areas to live in to maximize kite surfing time. After work surf and such. Also, if I plan to kite surf in Melbourne will i still need my car or can I manage without it.

Any advice or resources will be appreciated.

Cheers,
Daniel

having moved here a year ago i also had the same question. but to answer your question you will need a car regardless of where you live in melbourne. depending on the weather conditions you may have to go to different beaches.
winter means shorter daylight so after work (5pm) session is almost zip... you can do this during the summer where you get daylight up till late 7pm.
I currently live in the cbd as i just miss the big city life, the cons i guess i have to drive to the beach which takes me anywhere from 20-30 mins st kilda or altona. not bad i would say.

If you want to live close to the city and still be close to the beach, you probably want to look at Port Melbourne, South Melbourne, St Kilda and Middle Park region. They're all close to the city.

If you live close enough to the beach, you won't need a car, but it will limit your options depending on the wind direction. Choices from there would be to bite the bullet and get a car or catch lifts with other people when its not a southerly (mainly winter)

Thanks.

The south Melbourne is very attractive to me. Sounds like reality is I would have to keep my car if I plan on kitesurfing.

In the city, where is the launching/landing area. Is it along beaconsfield parade? or more in the st.kilda area?

Depends on the wind and the weather. St Kilda is the main spot although its busy unless you get out during working hours. There are other spots like beacon's cove, port melbourne nearby if you are prepared to put up with a bit of chop but its recommended to stay away from shore to avoid annoying lifeguards.

Cars give you the flexibility to travel to places like Altona (about 20 minutes from the city) which has awesome flat water or to go to other spots nearby for northerlies (Brighton). There are also awesome spots within 1-2 hours of melbourne which are worth going to. (Inverloch, Rosebud, Point Henry, Point Danger)

If you are wanting night life along with close to the kiting - St Kilda is your best bet.

Altona is quite close, I think it'd be just about as far as my drive at the moment!

The region from Port Melbourne to St. Kilda looks good. I sure like south melbourne and st. kilda from the things I've read. All the other things like rent, work, restaurants, bars comes into play. Thanks for the tips, at least I now where I should be to get some reasonable chances to kitesurf.

Let me know when you arrive and I'm happy to show you some of the local kitespots.

The other advantage of St Kilda/Port Melbourne/South Melbourne is the access to foreshore parking permits. Not sure what other areas get access to it, but for about $20/year it gives you free parking on the beach front anywhere from Port Melbourne up to Elwood which is pretty helpful. I know more than a fair share of people that have been stung with parking tickets while out kiting.
