Looks a little gusty, but it's something and I'm craving a kite this afternoon.
I'm visiting VIC so no idea where the good spots are. Where would the closest spot to Laverton be for a semi-noob in these W-ish / WSW-ish winds?

Altona is the place to be, right near laverton. Just watch out for the power liners ;-)

Ah yes I heard about that

Hope by the time work finishes, the wind is a little bit more onshore. I think at the moment its more W than S.

Its almost straight SW now. Might head down there to check it out.

If I don't return, avenge my death.

Nobody panic, I am back and in one piece.

What a session down at Altona this afternoon... brilliant. Just brilliant.

Started off very cross shore, got about half an hour of riding done, working on getting upwind (with not much success). Then the wind died. Sat around in the sun for half an hour in the hope of more wind.

Then...

The wind increased and swung around to almost straight onshore and I though "Hell I can't even stay upwind, how can I go out now?". But I didn't want to waste the wind and went out anyway. Walked far out enough to make it safe and got a few good runs in before beaching.

After a few walks of shame, I somehow managed to stay upwind and out on the water for the next 2 hours without coming back in. After that everything just seemed to go right. Tried my first little jump. Landed it. Kept trying to go bigger. In the end I managed to get well above head height. Best feeling ever.

After such an amazing session, the thing that I am most happy about is that I can actually stay out and kite now - instead of walking back up the beach.

Now I need rest...

PS: Altona has some crazy seaweed. Is it always like that?

Probably not the best place to learn to go upwind in onshore winds... Especially at high tide in strong winds.

Yeah I was a little cautious to begin with, I was walking far out to do water starts and getting a few runs before coming ashore. After a few of those I got the hang of it and it just clicked.

Brilliant busy day. It was a bit cross but yeah mostly on shore, gusting up to 25 or so. There was a numpty that asked me to launch his kite, so i went over to pick it up and he goes "no, can you hook in and get it in the air for me?"

I looked at him like he was a nut and then he goes "no it's a new kite so i just want to see if it flies." So I am sitting there on the beach hooked into his kite, it's fine, go to land it and hes like "no, now I want to hook in, can you unhook and pass it over to me?"

Kite at 12, gusting like crazy, no bloody way. Looked at him like he was a nut again and landed it in a hurry. Told him he should seriously consider not going out if he can't launch his own kite, He launches it himself a few minutes later and spends the day body dragging in the shallows in front of everyone. Ugh.

On another note, anyone know what happened to the guy down the beach near the reserve? Looks like 2 ambulances showed up and were treating a kiter. He was moving his legs while they were treating him so he wasn't dead.

When did that happen chino? I left at about 5:30 and didn't see any ambulances. Hope the guy is ok.

Which guy was doing the launching fiasco? Was it the dude on the black or dark navy and orange/red kite? (Cabrinha I think?). He was probably the only guy out there who was more of a beginner than I was. He ended up hanging around the first rocky outcrop past the wharf trying to relaunch his kite and chase his board for the most part. In the end he did get a few good short standing runs!

I was down there this arvo and called the ambo for the poor bugger (it would have been around 6pm). One of the local kiters saw us setting up down at Apex and asked us if we had a phone and to call 000.

At first everyone thought he'd broken his ankle/leg, he was in absolute agony (maybe from a jump gone wrong or something). But he said that he was standing there and didn't know what had happened.

After a closer look a ray had stung him in the ankle, bit of blood but apparently its excruciating. Not sure if the barb was still in his foot or not, poor guy, its a long recovery from what I hear (the barb is covered in some bad ass bacteria).

I left once the ambo had some painkillers pumping into him. If anyone knows him, give him all the best and I hope he has a speedy recovery and gets back out on the water soon.

I've never seen the tide so high, I wonder if that had anything to do with it and bringing the local wildlife in closer, he wasn't that far from shore when it stung him apparently.

Rays are everywhere, I swim at gnotuk Aspendale most days & I see plenty of rays, banjo sharks, salmon , snapper etc all with 100m of the shore line. Glad all had a good session,Brighton was crowded & choppy.
Altona needs to be treated with care... I broke my arm there a few years back after coming unhooked mid backfill kiteloop & landed on sandbar. Same problem st Kilda has, stuff up on a big trick & end up on sand

Hope he recovers alright! Spearfish some ray? Goes good with lemon ;-)

Good times, enjoyed st Kilda, was fairly gusty tho,,-..

I was personally over powered, moved out of the sweet Flatwater at point spot, and moved up to flatwater up near pier. After my session i enjoyed watching the handle pass show back near the kicker.

What I've noticed is that experienced kiters are excellent at sharing the stoke.

But only need to add one Kiter who only cares about himself and it shuts the progression session down.

It's a shame.... Coz it was awesome watching the tricks being throwin down, but it sucks that couple guys possibly oblivious were constantly getting in the way, and they sucked.

Anyway, I know it's a uphill battle and only getting worse, but there is only soo much room in any one area.....

I'm stoked on my kiting at moment.
Life is good.

I saw the ambulances also. Always a bit of a shock to see ambulances (even at Altona).

I guess we should add sting rays to the list of reasons why Altona is a spot to stay away from......... (and the weed as Zarb points out - always there, but more or less of it depending on the weather).

Ouch! A stingray - the murky water there would make them very hard to spot. The water at Aspendale is much clearer. Haven't seen any stingrays there but did have the company of a seal in the waves once. They keep well away though.
