Hey guys

I'm new to kitesurfing - I've had lessons, got my own (2nd hand) kit - 7m Cabrinha Revolver kite - I'm around 50kg so it suits me.

I'm at the point where I am doing board starts - my kite control is pretty good, I've done the body dragging and I can stick the board on my feet while in the water. I can do the power stroke - but just trying to get enough on it to get up and standing.

I went out a few weeks back with a mate - the first time without an instructor - so I was nervous, but managed to get up once or twice even if it was only for a few metres! I felt a bit rushed though as I had to get off after an hour and a half. I haven't been out since then - partly because of the weather but also because I don't yet feel confident enough to go out on my own.

I guess I am wondering if there is anyone out there who goes to St Kilda or Brighton Beach regularly who wouldn't mind helping me out, helping me launch my kite, double checking my lines and maybe giving me a few tips? At my last lesson, the instructor told me I don't need any more lessons - just to practice a lot!

Cheers

Kim

Hey Kim,

I've got some mates that are at about the same point as you are who are just getting up with a water-start. I think they have found it very helpful to have one on the beach with no kite and one in the water hooked in. It helps to have someone to assist with relaunch and for exactly the kind of support you feel you'd like. I'm sure they'd be more than happy for you to join them.

Unfortunately none of us will be around until after new years, but if you are still looking by that stage then give me a yell - 0421491418.

Cheers
Tom

Thanks Tom! Thats just the kind of help I am after.
I'll give you a call after New Years and try and arrange something.

I'm also at about the same stage, getting in the water, doing v dives and getting up for a bit trying to link in figure 8's. I went to st kilda on my own since my lessons first time on weds, second time today and found the people there really friendly and helpful, willing to check out your lines, help you launch etc and all really nice : )
might be worth going down to st kilda and just talking to people if you get a chance!
all seem like a nice bunch

hi kimi and other melbourne newbies,

i'm perhaps a fraction ahead of where you are, i can basically get going and if things are just right i can stay upwind. however things like self-landing, water starting when my kite has turned inside out and anything beyond back and forth kiting are still challenging, if not downright mysterious. so i can't necessarily teach anyone anything, but i'd be happy to have some other beginners to chat with and help each other launch, land, keep an eye on, and share any insights, triumphs, etc that happen along the way.

i don't have a car, so i've been getting the train to brighton and hampton. stkilda crowds put me off a bit. i'd like to try altona, but unsure of the desirable wind direction and what beacon readings to look at for the best wind info. my work is flexible at the moment so weekdays can work, although i try to avoid the midday sun.

anyone interested just email me and we can have a chat,

ciao, brendan
