When Kiting at St Kilda near the Royal Melb Yacht Club you must obey the boating rules in staying 50m from sailing boats ( and SUPs), especially the young kids in the sailing school. . Or you must slow to 5knots within 50m .

This is not the first time KBV has received complaints over the years. The consequence may be that Kiting is banned in the area, and naturally we all do not wish this to occur. If you are one of these kiters please stay clear of sailing boats and if you see others not adhering please politely advise them to stay clear.

KBV is seriously trying to avoid taking the next dramatic step of identifying, reporting and banning serial offenders in the interest of saving the kiting location for everyone else.

Thank you

ps comments from KBV facebook fyi.

Hi all, and thank you for the notes. Please if we can stick to the specific issue at hand, and not introduce other factors.

Kiting near the kids sailing;
In short just please try to stay 50m away or slow down. from them when they are sailing too. Its not that often that they sail the same time that we cant stay clear. I know parents whos kids sail in those classes and it scares the crap out of them having kites jumper very close. I have also witness this. I was not there on the recent day. So on this issue please be mindful and considerate.

Lee Issue:
I am fully aware of the manager in charge of the sailing school , ie Lee. I agree his conduct and manner is extremely inappropriate, there is no question of that fact. And I have received many complain about him recently. What Lee does himself is a separate issue. And I will speak with him and strongly suggest he conduct himself in a more professional manner.

Power boat issue
Yes agree if you would like to make a complaint then that’s up to you. I don’t see how this is at all relevant or in anyway mitigates kiters responsibility to do the right thing.

It is a small areas that is a shared water sports area.
Anyway …enough said. Have a great weekend...Rick.

Never seen the sailing school staying in the 5 knots limits or staying within 50m of others (e.g people on a SUP).
Different rules for different people ?

And when you talk to the Yacht Club:

- The stones from building the marina are still there in the flat water and were not cleaned up.
- Kiddie pool largely gone as a result of the building works.

- The promise was that there would be less boats anchored in the kiting zone after the marina was extended.
There are more now, with some of them just rubbish and releasing a mixture of rust/paint into the water

- Not to mention the guys who do sand there boats at the new pier, polluting the water..

Hi there,

I was just wondering, and I have only noticed them this year. Do the yachties have to remove those marker flags from the water when they are done? I saw almost 3 kites get wrapped up in them yesterday and the are a nuisance and in the way.

Cheers...

Yes in fact there are different rules for different vessels on the water. Kiters and windsurfers are a vessel. Whether you like it or not.

But the general rule is, a vessel with better ability to manoeuvre must give way and space to the another vessel that has less ability to manoeuvre.
