Need some advice re kiting in Ocean Grove.
I will be down there for the weekend and it looks like it will be 20+ SW. Raffs beach will probably be gusty but what about the eastern end of the beach?

Is it kiteable? Any hazards? How is the surf on the eastern end. Can only bring a TT not enough room for the surfboard.

Thanks!

Thanks. Is that because Ocean Grove is not good at all or just because Torquay is better? It's mainly a family trip and I plan to duck out while the little ones are doing their nap hence my desire to kite Ocean Grove.

Ocean grove further down is ok in an easterly, you might find it a bit hard as there's quite a bit of swell pumping through at the moment.
Kiting point danger in Torquay at low tide offers some good flat water spots and a few waves out the back to boost off.

Hi Ed

if there is any west in the wind stay as far away from the Bluff as possible, 17w car park at a minimum,

we kite at collendina a fair bit as there is a fair section of flat water between the waves and some decent swell on the good days, try to hit it at low tide if possible as there is minimal beach

As be prepared to be on your own there isn't to may of us down this way

I've been there 3 times. The last time I went was in front of the Cheeky Cow cafe (about mid-beach). As the tide went out a whole bunch of hidden rocks / reef exposed itself. I was lucky not to land on them whilst jumping.

Be aware, or maybe head closer to the west-end of the beach...? I enjoy the spot but lots of seaweed to weigh your lines down if you drop your kite..

I've been there... it's not a bad spot, but there is a reason people bang on about tourquay. It is much better.

When I was there, the waves were sufficiently big that you'd not see the surfers until it was almost too late, so try and keep clear.

Thanks guys,
excellent advice. Will give it a shot as the forecast for the weekend looks less violent than yesterday (30-40+).

Has anyone kited inside the river section past the bridge? Plenty of flat water but you'd need a dead S to SE?

There are power lines there. It would be gusty and a strong current. No point i don't think.

Lake Connewarre is a good spot if you want to give it a go, google map Brinsmeads Lane Leopold.

Take the track to down to the waters edge via car, set up in grass and best to water launch.
Waist deep water all around. Great in a SW

Yep, plenty of times. It works ok on a Northerly and Southerly. Due to the shape of the river there are plenty of holes (where you will just drop out) but like every spot, you learn them and keep away. Mid to high on an incoming tide is best. Outgoing tide can be a problem if you drop your kite as the bridge would come into play.

Mind the power lines near the bridge though

13th Beach is better than near the river mouth or Bluff at Ocean Grove, But again Point Danger is Better than 13th Beach.

The Bluff can make kiting there very gusty. So Kiting further along can be better.

I have kited in the river heaps, There are a lot of holes keep your kite high.
