I got quite a large tear in my canopy when I was out in brighton just before Christmas, it goes all the way to the leading edge. Where is the best place to get my repairs done in melbourne?

Hi Issy,

I have had a repair to LE done through RPS in Elwood - they send it off - can't remember where but it was a good job.

If it is just the leading edge ( ie No bladder damage ) take it direct to a sail maker......

eg: Thompson Sails
03 9571 8677 ( Glenhuntly rd Caulfield )

From memory a full seam to seam leading to trailing edge of canopy cost me about $60 ( a few years ago )

Turn around was about 1 week. Just make sure your kite is free of sand, sailmakers hate unfolding kites to find half the beach fall out all over their loft floor.

You can take it to RPS or SHQ but all they do is send it to Goodall Sails or similar who charge considerably more and then the shops add a percentage as well.

If it is a bladder and canopy repair..... I would recommend you send it to Moti Levi

www.kiterepair.com.au/

They have a good reputation and quick turn arounds, you just post them your kite and a week later they post it back.

Thankyou both for the info. After speaking to a few kiters I gathered Thomson sails was the best bet. The repair cost about $80, much cheaper than the quotes i got from a few other places. I am very happy with the job that was done, its perfect! I asked James (Thomson) if he could have it done within three days and he did with no extra charge. So happy that I can get back out on the water.

Thanks for the tip about the sand, unfortunately I learned that one the hard way. Last time I got a job done up in Queensland, the sailmaker charged me an extra $15 for having a sandy kite, he said he had to take the time to clean it so why should he have to labor for free, I actually think that's fair enough.

Thomson sails is no longer in Glenhuntly road, nor on that phone number.
You just need to call James on 0403 011 062 to arrange a pick-up or drop-off.
