I was thinking of posting this in the general section to P**s the Victorians off but I thought better of it.

I'm a relative beginner, just started staying upwind and turning, but not consistently. I'm heading down south in the next couple of weeks and was eyeing off Augusta as a place to continue practicing my "skills". Was more interested in the river than the open ocean but will take what I can get.

My question to the wise/local what do I need to look out for, where should I rig up etc?

Hope someone can help, sorry if this has been brought up before.

Cheers

Great spot but not ideal if you struggle to stay upwind as you might end up on the other side with trees etc in the water and no beach to walk back on. Also rigging/launching is a bit of a challenge there

Most beginners/learners head across the cut in the estuary (swim or deep water walk) and go about a km east.
It is shallow water, knee to ankle depth, so you can stop yourself from being blown across to East Augusta.
It is a popular area for practising jumps but most people will keep an eye out for you.
Most other competent kiters rig on the corner of the grassed area at Colour Patch carpark, or on the very small beach adjacent,
if the tide permits but even good kiters still get confused with the wind direction and how to launch properly. I see it on a daily basis.
If you do want to launch from there may I suggest a self water launch as the safest option.
Land your kite in the same area being aware of aged spectators.
Good luck and have fun

+1 for what handyman said .. walk up approx. 1km toward the river mouth.. stop and set up when u see the big sandbank poke out. .. If there is no one there I prob would not go out . .. plenty of room to launch etc.. normally people there to assist .. Check the Leeuwin Lighthouse reading for current wind strength .. Check Margaret river on seabreeze.com for forecast but add a few knows to the forecast wind strength.. Ideal wind there is South East .. which is early this week .. I will be there !!! may catch you !!

Thanks again. It's not looking good for me to get out until the weekend, hopefully not too many people out on the long weekend.

Cheers
