After many years I have finally convinced my wife this year that I can fit in kitesurfing between long hours at work and a young family - this is (was?) my first season and I'm loving it and 100% hooked - just about getting the whole upwind thing under control. The only condition my wife gave me was to stop doing any other sport while kiting...

I understand that Perth's weather has been unusual over the last six weeks or so with all the rain and lack of SSW's for beginners (I even took the family up to Dongara for 4 days over the long weekend and spent most of the time sitting on the beach watching others trying to keep their 14s and 17s out of the water).

Now it looks like there may be some wind over the weekend, but I guess my question is this - is this it?? Are we now at the end of the season in Perth and should I pack away my kites (10 & 7) and dust off the mountain bike again (per the wife's condition), or is there a chance that I can get a couple more session in over the next few weeks? What does March/April usually look like in Perth?

Thanks all - appreciate any advice.

what you're really asking is how many sessions you have left in a proper sea breeze of at least 15-18 knots so you can have a good time on your 10 or 7m, until the end of April ?

My stats for the last 6 seasons says anywhere from 9 to 19 days like those from mid-march until the end of April.

So no, the season is not over yet. It's been unusually bad for many weeks that's for sure, but that doesn't mean it's over.

If you're that hooked, you should seriously consider a light wind setup like a 17m kite and a large twin tip. Light winds are not as fun, require patience and perseverance but 1) you will be able to get out much more often especially during crap weeks and 2) you will develop better technique and become a much more efficient kiter in the long run.

Also if you want to stretch the season a bit, consider doing a week-long trip up North, like in Geraldton and Shark Bay, you can have great conditions up there in April and May.

Put your 7 on ice but keep your 10 out and ready to go. I can't believe the season is over yet. Also the South West and Augusta will still have good wind for a bit.

Does this include days where the breeze may only blow for a couple of hours?

I'd say get a new wife. What kind of partner gives an ultimatum like that that would inhibit your ability enjoy your own life? As long as you are taking care of your kids and share your enjoyment with them then i don't see an issue.

I would be opting for a divorce at this stage, either that or give her the ultimatum of stay in the kitchen doing dishes or learn how to kitesurf.

^ clearly demonstrates how many f#ckheads have adopted the same principal to the extent that majority of the population now blackmail their spouses in to "having things the way they want it" at a detriment to their beloveds quality of life (no kitesurfing).

Just because everybody does it doesn't make it f#ckin right. Remember in the old days how most people believed in women being the weaker and less dominant sex both physically and mentally? One women in the 18th century was locked up in an asylum for putting an ad in a newspaper seeking a "life partner", purely because women who advertised their love in such a manner were be considered crazy. Thankfully sexism started to die out after the war and now feminism (or rather egoism) is corrupting women's minds to the extent where they effectively blackmail their husbands. So, when someone (me) finally starts to talk out about it... what happens? You all call witchcraft?...f#ckin pathetic.

lol - settle down there champ.

We're all having a laugh about the trials and tribulations of running a family while trying to fit in our own hedonistic activities (such as kiting) and you're throwing around wikipedia links, getting all preachy on us.

And so if a "preachy" response is not appropriate to an attack on one's personal life then what is? More abuse in the other direction? I offer truth, thereby breaking the back and forth retaliation that goes nowhere in to a domain of understanding whereby we can all feel alleviated and... you guessed it! divorce our wives!

Drewp... .....its really fine if you are experienced enough to read the signs..or if you are with a group of people who are experienced enough who warn you. I,like many..love going far out...its such a great adventure. But i will know the kite well especially if i fixed it or would have done a few attempts on 300m shore things with it prior etc. There can be so much to see out there round the back of pengos...abrolhos..other islands and reefs etc..and so easy to get in and out. I would never have learnt this however if it wasnt for experienced long term WA etc kiters waggling hands at me to warn me when out there. I have seen many a good kiter non sponsored type warn people prior either 'not to go out..its changing direction and in a lull' in spots such as gero etc. If you dont listen to them you are really taking your life into your own hands..particularly at a new spot .
In this case i did run down and catch this kiter just as he was loaded up at water shore and gave a warning.not that i'm amazing at all and allways learning as all are...but there were dozens of other wsurfers/kiters around..noone went out..kiters because we all had 7's and 9's......it didnt feel right
This seems to happen alot to people who visit for a day or two or week. Or need to get their 'day in' no matter what..
I met the wife who came down after. noone could help him... maybe in the first half an hr if we had a fifteen.
When dusk came and we couldnt see him anymore at least we knew he had ditched kite finally to paddle in on board. It really was two hrs after dark+ & V sad to see. Think he's fine though just shocked...

Whatever darren marshell action sports said on that other post about going far out is the way it is and gospel..

To the OP No it's not over yet................had a great local sesh tonite over powered on the 9m at times; wind picked up closer to sunset. I have kited at Easter in the past when it fell in early April so you should be able to get in a few more sessions before the wind dies down and hopefully the swell picks up.

Timmy the Abrolhos is a tad more than 300m offshore ;)

I have only missed 2 days i think in the last 2 weeks in Gero/Horrocks and the next week is looking great. Plenty of swell around too. Today at Horrocks was just fantastic, warm water, warm wind and some reasonable waves.

Hi Guys

I am in WA first 2 weeks in May coming from prime kiting season here in Scotland but at least it will be warmer - sounds like you had a lousy season - any chance of wind ? I will be bringing a foil and maybe a foil kite if its really dodgey - any tips on where is best - looking to do a wee pilgrimage to Margaret river but other than that looking to see the sights and do as much surfing and kiting as I can
