cue panicked newbies unable to relaunch setting of flares & EPIRBS.....
more dangerous for experienced riders with all the extra clutter.... imagine getting a mast height on the head with all that gubbins
learn to swim? seriously if you can't do 2k's without blinking you shouldn't be on outer reefs....
good luck with offshore competitions, what about kitestock? compulsory? way to ruin the sport,

Dear All,

See updated information below on link

Looks like DOT have their printable info/sticker wrong. Sticker lists PFD type 1 (collared lifejacket) as mandatory 400m offshore or more. Text in the article lists PFD type 3.

Have they they listed what the fine $ would be for non compliance when enforced?

400m is a fraction of a proper tack upwind, I'd say that every session I go between 1-2ks offshore, must be the minority.
On another note it will keep all the kooks off my break (s)!

my thoughts exactly. more nanny state crap putting restrictions on us all. where the hell do we stash flares, epirb and wear a life jacket, and keep it all together while chasing down our gear, all the while hoping the epirb isn't started?
no fines for a couple of years so I'm not going to comply for a long time. what a joke.

The EPIRBs that I've use in the past (not for kitesurifng) are impossible to set off accidentally. I don't think that this will be a problem. If it is then DOT will need to change their policy.

No over reaction really. Just sick of so many rules popping up over all. Not just in the sports we all enjoy either. It just seems that govt is kicking in new rules for stupid people for all kinds of stuff.
If I can safely skydive, wing suit or whatever, and no fine but if I don't wear a pfd a meagre 400m from shore I get fined?
Really?
