In the same vein as jkeys post re cott bans...

Got some kiting in at peli point this morning, horrible gusty easterlies but hey new kite must get wet sooner or later...

I was there for about 2-2.5 hours.

During this time I saw about 4 people rig kites on the grassed area and then walk out to the end of the point past the fence.

I also saw at least 4 other people walk their gear up to the end past the fence, rig up on the sand and launch.

Before I arrived there were a handful of people kiting at the end of the point and it was mentioned that they had their bags/gear up the end too.

Let me spell it out.

YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO LAUNCH PAST THE FENCE.... YOU WILL GET US BANNED FROM PELI POINT!

The plan (2nd hand info from Dean/WAKSA) is to mount a sign saying as much on the fence itself, and further signs near the grassed rigging area.

Whats more, I'd not be suprised to find that any ranger/calm officer has the same right to confiscate equipment in a similar way to what is rumoured to be possible at cottesloe.

I for one didnt know that you werent allowed to launch past the fence, Ive only kited there a few times and each time I walked up past the fence. Each time I was there I saw about three kites go into the trees near the grass, people getting dragged around etc... Not to mention kites ending up on the fence, isnt one of the main rules of kiting, NEVER KITE UPWIND OF HARD OBJECTS. The reason I kited past the fence on every occasion is simple, safety. I thought this was what it was all about??

so whats the go on the easterly, fight 35 at pt walter
whats the problem walking up, launching and heading off not to return
those bird watchers are worse, wander through the reeds etc
and abuse you when you take two steps on the beach bunch of old oc's

still if thems the rules thems the rules
haven't seen anything to support that conclusion
will abide if official (bend over and take it like a man)

Just elaborating a bit on all this... the whole area at Pelican Point is a nature reserve.

That means that CALM have a huge amount of pull in what goes on down there... thankfully, they are kindly 'allowing' (for want of putting it a better way) us to use the area for kiting, however they are expecting that we respect the wildlife and the 'rules' so to speak.

There is a sign, it will be going up very soon. Basically it says

ATTENTION - KITE EXCLUSION ZONE
The beach area beyond this fence is a nature reserve and access is restricted.
Please do not rig or launch kites beyond this fence.

That obviously means that it doesn't matter what the wind direction is. It's each person's choice where you kite depending on conditions, but know that if people persist in rigging on the point etc, we will eventually be banned from the area.
