I was on a 9.5m when I crashed and let go of the bar. The lines got twisted and kept the kite powered, it launched me out of the water and crashed hard again taking me further out, before I could recover it launched me again and again. The lines were badly tangled the kite was out of control and launching me hard without even holding the bar, I realised I was in trouble the longer I keep the kite the further out I go, and I’m now at a stage where I’m getting too far out to swim back, but I had to make a choice so it was time to let the kite go.

With the kite and board gone I was tired and a distance off shore I wasn't sure id be able to swim back after all that, I looked around and no one was there so I knew I was in trouble so I started swimming back slowly.

A couple minutes later appeared an airush kite so I stuck my hand up and he gave me the thumbs up, came over, got me to hold on and took me to shore. When we got to shore my kite had also blown up and must have been a km down and so he lands his kite and starts running after mine....

I wasn't going to post on this forum, just use it for information and read others experiences because I never really have anything constructive to say but I’d like to say thanks Blake you got me out of a tough situation today.

It was only my third time out since finishing my lessons so I thought I’d stay out of peoples way by going 50 meters further down, I must have been 300-400m down after all that, I’m sure glad you kept an eye out mate. I really appreciate your help thank-you!

Glad to hear you pulled up ok dude...... hopefully it hasnt shaken you to much. Best you get out on friday the forcast would better suit your 9.5m

Try to buddy up while you are still in a learning transition, It does take awhile to read wind conditions, talk to others and observe before you kite. Take note of what size kites are already on the water. Let other kiters know that you are still green and to keep any eye on you.
Not trying to tell you things you may already know but I would hate to think that the lesson you had today puts you off for life.

Kite Safe Kite Tomorrow.

Yeah I actually did all of the above mate except asking them to keep an eye on me.

Agreed, for me tomorrow is a good day for 9.5m and I think 25 knots I will stick to a 7m for this season at least.

Thanks for your advice.

Yeah, happened to me as well last year after lessons. Why don't you go to the river? I went to Pinnas two days ago but I'm still not ready for the ocean, I can feel it.

Once I build confidence might try again. Till than I'll go to the river...

if you have just started do you think its really wise to be going out in 25+ knots if you are not 100% confident ?

Sounds like a recipe for disaster imo

OK, I'm gonna spread the love for Pinnas too.

I was out yesterday to have a go with my new kite, 11m Waroo, I tried to get there early before the wind picked up so I could get used to it, but as it was I got there when it was around 25knots, as told to me by JP.

I was confident with the wind & the size kite I have, I actually weigh a lot heavier than I look so it was all good.
But one lesson I learned was as a newbie, to wear a flotation vest.

I set up & launched the kite, got in the water & surprised myself after not having done it for so long by getting up on the board pretty much straight away.
Had a very short ride, albeit a shaky one, crashed the kite, which normally isn't a problem; the one thing I'd been hoping to get away with was not wearing a buoyancy vest; I'd worn them during my lessons & when in Qld, so ending up in the drink wasn't a problem as I'd always bobbed along & relaunched pretty quickly.
Without the vest it was a problem, mainly due to my inexperience, but I sank & getting pulled along by the kite I sank deeper, it was more of an annoyance than anything & made it difficult for me to keep above water & relaunch the kite.
So I pulled the safety systems & self-rescued back to shore while another kiter took my board into shore for me.

So, after that big spiel, I'd just like to throw a big thanks out to Mr Ozone C4 rider who saved me from what I'm sure was to be a huge walk to retrieve my board.
And I think he was just getting it for me to get going again, so I didn't have to body drag, but ended up taking it in when I said I was heading back to shore.
Much appreciated!

Pinnas seems to be the spot that is full of good people, thanks guys I'll be sure to repay the favour if/when the need comes up & I can help.

There are a good group at Pinnas who generally keep an eye on others in distress.
It's not the best water, but the people and the vibe are whats kept me kiting there for the last 3 years.
