So a windsurfer accidently hits a beachgoer in Cott and now they are proposing a ban on kite and wind surfing in the area as per Sunrise this morning... Not my local, but not the best of news!
I've heard the same debate every summer for the last 4 years I have been here. WAKSA put up a sign that was barely visible and most people were just ignoring it. I might be wrong but I think the sign is gone now.
When it's blowing over 20kn, you'll never see a beach gower venturing on the beach there so we can question the necessity of a ban.
On the other hand in the sub 12kn, kiters should have more consideration for the beach gowers and stay clear from the main access at telephone box or dutch'inn main entrance.

waksa didn't put the sign up, the council did . It was put in the wrong area and asked to be moved
The problem with launching and landing at Phoneboxes is the distance between the beach and hard stuff, namely wooden bollards and asphalt. It leaves very little room if something goes wrong. You don't have to look any further than this forum and Marks accident to see that. At least the area directly south offers a bit of sand dune as a buffer.
i read that as though they want to delineate rigging and de-rigging areas, and keep the playground safe for kids. which isn't a ban on actual water sports etc. the same will probably happen at floreat/cities eventually one would expect?
Some crew are either clueless or super selfish when carrying their gear around, be it kite or windsurf in my experience. windsurfers have the big board and sail to carry down no matter what (i don't know whether you can rig up on the beach and carry it down in parts), but kiters that decide they just HAVE to carry their kites up beach paths to the carpark to deflate ** me to tears when it is 15kn and mum, dad and 2 kids are trying to get down the same path. at 25kn with no one around, fine, but when you are dragging it up the path and getting hooked on fences etc you just look like a selfish muppet. cop a bit of sand on your gear by deflating or derigging on beach, show some courtesy/be selfless every now and again, and the complaints are less likely to happen...imo.
Does anyone know about the incident they are hanging their hat on? I wouldn't assume it was a windsurfer given the usual misreporting. It could easily be either?
