I got lessons in December and basically just need practice what i have learned ie how to properly control the kite etc. However i discussed the size of my kite with some kitesurfers at the weekend who seemed to think i should have at least a 9m kite - based on a bodyweight of 75Kg's. Just wondering if anyone out there has any opinions ? My 7m is a Griffin Argonaut.

as a reference I weigh 70kg and most days in the summer I would be riding a 7m or a 5m. 7m is fine for you.

I think when u are beginning that you are less efficient with the wind therefore you need a slightly bigger kite than when you are proficient ..

I have a couple of friends that are about 75kgs .. they have learnt on 9m rebel. after 2 seasons they still using the 9m and also a 7m. I would suggest 9m for you. but keep your 7m as you will need it when you are better .. and for days of 20knots plus ..

Also depends where you are kiting ... if you mainly in the ocean the wind is always a bit stronger so the 7m will work well ... if you mainly on the river the wind is usually lower then you will need a 9m.

Have fun .

My advice is go to your local spot and get lots of local advice. If it's around Perth, most people would be riding 9m's for a pretty typical seabreeze. You'll find on strong seabreeze days you're probably wanting your 7m.
Initally though, to get a handle on your kite skills a 7m is perfect for some body dragging and playing around with the board. But if you've got the bug you'll need a 9m. A larger kite is also less twitchy which makes learning a bit more forgiving.
I'd back Monkers up and go for something like a 9m rebel.

I am 65kgs and spent all last season on my North Vegas 9m, I can depower it right down but definitely wouldn't go under a 9m.

Hi mate,

Another reference point for you, I'm 85kg and I use my 9m Lithium when the charts showing 20-25 knots. Below that I'm on a 12m.

I spent more than a year with just the 9m. I reckon given your weight you might be ok. Learning with just one kite might be an advantage, build better skills, more efficient kiting. Its easy to get a bigger kite and use it inefficiently, have bad habits.

Size of your board matters too......
