Hi, I'm part of a team building a land yacht as part of a uni project. We've been tasked with designing, finding resources and building the yacht as well as writing a full report on this.

We're in the very early stages of design and I'm needing some help with the following calculations:

Estimated Speed
Aerodynamic justifications
Efficiency
Bending Moment
Shear Stress

The last two I think I'm fine with, but it's the first two I'd like a bit of guidance with.

Not expecting massively detailed answers but anything that'll push me in the right direction would help, thanks.

Average and maximum speed will vary depending on size of yacht. As a rule of thumb the larger the yacht the higher the max and average average speed. (To a point).

What class of yacht are you building. If not a recognised class then; wheel base? rear axle width? sail area? sail type (sail or wing)? mast type (stayed or unstayed)?

What speed estimates are you after?
- Average speeds for given wind range? What wind ranges?
- Theoretical maximum?
- Practical maximum?

What Sylk said...

A landyacht is usually deisgned to class spec (ie: for racing) or to suit a particular venue/sailing site (ie: balloon tyres for rough ground, small for carpark sailing, etc). Furthermore, do you need one or two (or three+) passengers/pilots? Are you using available windsurf masts sails? etc

We don't usually dwell on the 'calculations' side of things, its more a 'test it and see' exercise. There are so many variables that come into landyacht design.

Get or borrow a copy of 'Aero-Hydrodynamics of sailing' by C.A. Marchaj (they are not cheap but its worth every cent you will spend)
Bigger libraries often have a copy or can get one for a borrow.
It will give you all the calculations that you need / want
