early to mid winter would be the best time for the Carnarvon to Alice half. best deal with wind, cooler weather. If you planned to do it say next winter, Im sure you could put me down for that leg as backup. as to wether you go E-W or W-E. at that latitude I dont really know. If you were doing the Nullabour you would do E-W in summer or W-E in winter.
Maybe short leg backup crews meeting along the way.

I believe in the 6degrees of separation principal.

For me there are about 10-12 major contributors to this forum and each of that mob has contact with at least 10 friends with whom they interact, that's 12 x 10= 120 and they have 10 other friends each in different circles, so its now 120 x10= 1.200. Their 10 friends each, take it up to 12.000 people. That's 4 steps, go for 5 = 120.000 and six= 1 million two hundred thousand people. What a wealth of ideas, views, and opinions we can collectively call upon, to help get the good ideas.

As an oldy, I would like to, before i step off this planet, see in motion an exercise that shows the co-operative genius use of the WWW and the interesting people thereon.

Many things i don't understand and haven't the time to learn, but i do realize that there are kids out there who could teach me a thing or two about the modern world and the way in which it works. I have other things to contribute and in turn they may learn from me and my like. Lets go down the road of modern adventure....

LATE THOUGHT....Could we collectively dedicate "Project AA" to the cause of that of the Woman doctor , killed in the Kokoda air crash yesterday. I would like to see a remote school with a outlook on the world. like school of the air, or a school for challenged kids, whatever, hook up with me thru all of you to run a web site on this project [called... Project A.A. ] for the time being. The standards will be, must be, high, fair, rewarding.

Until it gets rolling its Progect AA, that will change to an already selected name, when the basic design is ready to be put before the public. I don't want some smarty to hijack us and grab all we/I worked for.

The whole thing has to be for the promotion of landyachting, oversized billy carting
and it has to show the young that there are different ways of doing things and enjoying life, outside, outdoors, outback, remote.

So I am calling upon all of you to help me in whatever way you can. Please just spread the message. Time is short, and there is a lot to accomplish. If you can think of things that i may miss, speak up. I do have many notes written and yet to be typed up and posted.

the web is great, as long as people are inspired enough to search it out in the first place. Yes the media has a bit to answer for, but how do they get to know about anything in the first place in order to publish? Answer is that somebody tells them.
So what needs to happen is that someone takes responsibility for communicating with any and all means they can think of, and just putting it on the web for people to stumble over won't do. Letters to the sports dept, human interest editor etc etc. Most papers and mags are struggling for content, and they are lazy, so give them printable "press releases" it will help them fill up there papers. (sometimes they even pay you for it too!)

Kiwi ,yep ,your right, i have a fair amount of media savvy thru past done things. My experience is that one has to nurture them a bit, titilate them, play games with them, and lastly but not the least, you do most of the leg work, in an interesting way,they love offbeat,..... maybe that will never work, that's good, a chance of failure..great. You have to have added a touch of sorrow or indignation as flavor. A good mustard spices the meal.
Many clubs and their activities suffer from their media relations people not having their heart in the job, in a way, media rep is being done for the status of the person, not the club. Many clubs/activities suffer from too few people trying to do too much in too little time. presenting Same old ...Same old. I am not a clubby person as club constitutions often stiffle progressive forward movement, like governments. I seem to be able to get things done because i am not constricted by a club overview or collective procrastination.
Press media/print are not the best fronts, one must be prepaired to put the ugly dyle before the T.V> cameras and most importantly be available and go on hosted talkback' Think you will make a fool of yourself, dont know your interests good enough, or don't consider yourself a fair speaker in front of not strangers, but your friends, usually means failure.
The media per-say will grill you not unlike a barrister, they are testing your metal and conviction, looking for a weak spot that you may have. The first time I copped this from an aggressive young lady , i was a little taken aback and startled, almost shaken. I quickly recovered and accepted that she was only doing her job. lesson learnt.
Caution with cameras, they take what seems a lot of film, however the little bit they use could portray you at the worst second of the interview. You have to be prepared to wear that among your friends and peers. The worst they have portrayed me was in a still shot taken in Canberra. Around 1965-6 a survey party leaving for 8 mth work in outback, 15 local lads. they wanted a still photo of the group aroung and over one of our trucks. Assembled we did the shoot. The photo they used was the one where i happened to touch an itchy nostril with a finger. Yep you guessed it, front page if i remember correctly.
The media too, find life can be boring, they love a bit of spice...give em some.
This forum is a prime example, of the people here there are the regulars who know and speak their interests. Even amongst them there are some who stay protected for whatever reason . There are the completely open people, who do most of the posts and discussion. There are the semi silent observers , and the absolute silent watchers who will communicate with others as well. Collectively this is an exciting and informative forum, much knowledge and great humour in contained herein. It 's a great place to formulate ideas and place them before ones peers for correction. One has to be a little game and somewhat cocky too. The number of hits to a subject or post shows that this is stronger than the comments. Word is getting out and about, slowly. for me ..great show Blokes, keep up the good work.

What about this,
With my fibre mast, entirely different from my former aluminium, with three wire stays
supporting it to the chassi. What bending can i expect to experience, say using the 10 scale, straight/vertical is "0". at what point do i pack up for the day. Could i experience a stress break or crack. Would something like araldite act as a joining agent in an emergency.
One given is that my set up will weigh around 500kilos. so to actually get this moving would take the greatest effort. At this point it will be assisted by pushing off. I expect that there will be somewhat more stress to provide momentum than a sail board.
I would appreciate your experiences and observations

Interesting that horsepower one I seem to remember from waaaaay back
that a sail could generate roughly seven horsepower for every hundred square feet
very much rule of thumb of course but something to think about
